Editorial Reviews

2010 three CD set from the Prog/New Age keyboardist. Past, Present and Future is a triple disc set with each disc in this set reflecting part of the title Past, Present and Future. As the title implies the album focuses on time and the themes running through it also come under each of the three headings. The album is a solo piano work from Rick and features all new material and comes in a sleeve designed by artist Mark Wilkinson and will no doubt be enthusiastically received by the large and dedicated fan base commanded by Rick. 36 tracks.

This is pretty much what I thought it would be: New Age piano music. Very nice melodies totaling about three and half hours. Don't expect any of this to sound like Rick from his YES days or early solo efforts. This is meant for relaxing, but the melodies are nice and varied. What I don't understand is why there was no accompanying booklet!! C'mon now, 3 CD's of new piano music; you'd think he have a lot to say. I'm not disappointed, but this is not something I would listen to over and over. Bottom line is that I am still glad I bought it.

If you like the solo piano work of Rick Wakeman, buy this. If you like music for piano, buy it. It isn't Yes, it isn't progressive rock and if that is what you are looking for, look elsewhere. What it is is exquisite, intimate music for solo piano and as such, is wonderful. I'm not one to criticize something for not being something other than what it is or not being like something else. I listen to music on its own merits, to see where it takes me, and this goes somewhere close to sublime.

Beautiful and relaxing. Over 3 hours running time without marked contrasts between tracks and not a bit boring. Although different from the Rick solo works (or the ones with Yes) I'm familiar with (Henry VIII, Journey, Myths, 1984), the virtuoso's signature can clearly be heard through the entire set; it reminds me of the piano part in 'The Meeting', one of the tracks in the ABWH album. No booklet is the reason for four star rating, beats me why it doesn't include one.

As this review title states, you simply cannot go wrong with Wakeman!! This 3-disc collection of solo pianoworks by the maestro of the genre is a wonderful collection of "music for reflection," as I like to call it. Put it in your player at home, turn the volume DOWN to a lower register so that it becomes a part of the ambient atmosphere around you ... and then wait for the results. (You won't be disappointed.)

Excellent job, Rick ... as always! :-)
