Book Description

Sophie Turner runs Talismans, a Boston tarot parlor, where she reads tarot and keeps her family’s psychic legacy alive. However, in spite of her tragic family history and Tarot Alley’s reputation for being a mystical hotspot, Sophie has no psychic powers of her own – or so she thinks. Engaged to straight-as-an-arrow Boston PD Detective Roger Paris, and finishing her college degree in Computer Science, she’s ready to start a brand new life that has nothing to do with her paranormal past.

When the murder of her friend and client Patrice Bledsoe leaves Sophie traumatized, she can’t trust her own memory about what happened. She remembers a ghostly encounter moments before Patrice was killed, but she can’t remember anything about the murder, making her a prime suspect. Sophie doesn’t understand why the ghost appeared or why she was compelled to read his cards, revealing a story of violence and betrayal, but she is determined to find the truth about her friend’s murder.

It’s not the last time Sophie sees the tragic ghost figure, and she begins to believe her ghost is real when she’s plagued with visions she can’t ignore. When her skeptical fiancé won’t listen, she asks ghost hunter Dr. Gabe Mason for his help, leading her down a path of no return in more ways than one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, gripping read. June 23, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition
I found this paranormal mystery refreshingly different from all the vampire and shifter books flooding the market at the moment. It's more of a "ghost whisperer" book with some serious twists, angry ghosts and a high amount of danger and tension. Sophie is the heroine, and she's about as down to earth and "real" as any character I've ever read. She's been through a lot, and has to go through a lot more in order to solve the murder she's accused of committing, but she takes it in stride for the most part, and I admired her strength throughout (which includes navigating a sticky romantic entanglement). And of course the writing is top-notch, as anyone who's read Samantha's romance novels would expect.

My only complaint about this book is the very well-done cliffhanger at the end. Mind you, all of the issues in the book are wrapped up neatly, but a new mystery is introduced at the end as a lead in to future books...and I admit to being extremely impatient with such things. Here's hoping we get the next one soon...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read! June 22, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is Samantha's first attempt at this genre (paranormal mystery), and she did a great job! I was hooked from the first chapter... I read the book in 2 days. The characters were well written, and the subject material was very interesting. The story takes place in Boston, and there were some very cool facts about Boston (geography), its history, and some landmarks in Boston that I found equally interesting. I really hope she continues to write more books in this series-- I'm really looking forward to it! Well done, Sam!

5.0 out of 5 stars A different kind of Boston sleuth! July 25, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition
If you're like me and you've been reading great mysteries set in Boston for decades, perhaps you'll agree that after all the great Spenser tales and Dennis Lehane yarns, it's time for something new. And what could be more of a departure from the past than a Boston sleuth who reads tarot cards as her day job? Great read!

2.0 out of 5 stars 5 Star Story but... July 31, 2010

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This would have been a really fun read. The characters, the plot, and the setting were well developed. This would have been a 5 star book but the editing drove me insane. There were problems with plurals and tense and even some missing words. Having to stop and decipher really ruined the story for me. I like to read and think about the story, rather than think about the words.

I have read Samantha Hunter's Harlequin Blaze titles in the past and have always enjoyed them. She brings a little suspense into her romance titles and has always done a great job with it. Past Tense is her first foray into the mystery genre. I think she has done a wonderful job. Past Tense had a way of sucking me right into the story beside of Sophie as things happened. I felt like I got to know Sophie as she came to know herself and like I took part in every scene. I was just so absorbed in the story as a whole.

Ms. Hunter does a marvelous job with the characters. Sophie stands out the most as the main character and she is easy to relate to. In her late 20s or so and she's still trying to find her way in life and tragedy has struck in the past and strikes again at the beginning of this book. Roger is Sophie's fiance and also a police officer. He contrasts nicely with Sophie and you can see his love for her even though he can't seem to accept the supernatural world that Sophie seems inclined to become involved with. Gabe is great, a psychologist, and a ghost hunter. He's the best of both worlds and he's interested in helping Sophie find out about her past and put things to rest. All three make a great relationship triangle and while it's not at all the focus of the book, it makes a great side story and all three characters help propel the plot. I liked all three and if you are like me, for a long while you weren't sure which man was right for Sophie.

The main part of this book is the mystery and Ms. Hunter does an excellent job on moving the mystery forward without giving too much away. I was even surprised at one point by something that happened. Ms. Hunter did such an excellent job at leading you to believe one thing even though it was never stated.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a reject June 22, 2010
By Bob Day
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you're a huge skeptic of the paranormal, as I am, you have to leave your disbelief at the door, because this novel is a fantastic piece of writing. There are several passages that are reminiscent of page 203 et seq. in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" -- not because the scenes are similar, but because of the sheer power and force of the writing. This novel was rejected by all of the publishing houses the author submitted it to??? Unbelievable!! I'm very impatiently awaiting the next book in the series!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, excellent series idea, but -? June 16, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Have to agree with many of the other reviewers on this one. A great little read, good story & idea for a series, 3/4's thru I was thinking that this could turn into a really good series and was looking forward to reading another one. The book isn't perfect but it's a dern sight better than a bunch of the "new" "indie" author offerings. It's rough but it's readable, amusing and it was a fun read. Ms. Hunter has some romance books in print but this book could appeal to that crowd and the crew that likes more paranormal/mystery/action and a little less romance. Just don't leave me deliberately hanging with a wide open barn door. Make me like the characters and the premise enough to come back for more, even leave me wondering about some stuff but don't try to fix it so that I have to buy the next book cause that will make me not buy it, even if I normally would have. It all has to do with attitude - the author's - and mine.
