Life Changing,
By Richard S. Kornbluth MD "LaJollaLil" (San Diego) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pastel: Portraits (HT240) (Paperback)
"Pastel: Portraits" is a dynamic journey through the various techniques needed to master the profound art of chalk pastels. By reading this thorough guide, pastels transformed from being my worst enemy to my best friend. I watched my works change from desperate, melodramatic abstracts to well-developed, realistic portraits. The person that I have to thank for this miracle is Ken Goldman. His kind and light-hearted nature are translated in this book with its gentle and open suggestions. I can say without a doubt that Ken Goldman has changed my life.

This book was very basic and easy to follow. His instruction on color was excellent. However, I did expect to find more on the techniques of drawing the portrait.

This book was published in 1992, so it is dated in someways, but the information and advice is still very applicable and useful. The advice on color combinations is excellent. I have just finished a portrait of my grandson, who has flaming red hair and a lot of it, and used a blue-green complementary background, following one of the projects in this book. It literally makes him jump off the board. This understanding of using different complementary color schemes is new for me and well worth the price of the book.
