2.0 out of 5 stars Poor Christian Fiction - Ok for your run of the mill black novel, January 26, 2008
This review is from: The Pastor's Wife (Paperback)
I am going to leave this book mainly in the bathroom as something to do ...kind of like a tabloid. Something to read to pass the time when I am waiting on my next book delivery, donation or once again mistakenly left a "good book" at work.

I came by this book under a false Christian fiction pretense. Personally I am offended because I think it gives The Church a bad name.

You have the Pastor of the a flock of God's sheep being guided by his libido, stupidity and a lot of the basics stuff we all deal with in our own lives. The pastor's ideas on drinking alcohol, fornication and chicken heads fluctuated so often that I just gave up on that whole message.

The only valid scripture references took place in the last few chapters after this horrible depiction of a pastor was literally forced by the author's pen to stop being stupid and give off the essence of a message.

I think it was "Forgiveness"...but it was delivered in the manner that people say "God Bless you" after one sneezes.

If this book was supposed to be taken simply as a fiction novel then the characters were poorly and shallowly written. The only distinguish qualities a person CAN take away from their character portrayal is an image of stupid black people and typical, hypocritical Baptist folks.

I sometimes wish if people want to use the church as a background and expose some things they also include those hearts truly striving, I wish they would include the message, or at least be a better writer!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Match Made In Heaven., December 15, 2007
This review is from: The Pastor's Wife (Paperback)
Normally, you would think that having one mother would be enough, but for Terrance Ellis, he had three...his aunts. His grandmother's sisters included Dorothy Mae, Eva, and Mamie. They stepped in to take care of Terrance when a tragic accident took the life of his grandmother. Terrance caused a lot of trouble in his youth and he was determined to change his life after his grandmother died.

With his determination and the grace of God, he did just that. He became a rising pastor of Houston's Lily Grove Church. Since he's an adult and a man of God, his aunts did find something to argue about: it was time for Terrance to find a wife. For them, the woman could not just be any wife, but rather someone who would make an excellent First Lady of the church.

Young and handsome, Terrance Ellis never thought about finding a wife. He was just focused on his preaching and saving souls for the Lord. Little did he know that there were some ladies trying to be at his side, no matter what they had to do. One woman was determined to become his wife at any cost. Ms. Savannah McKinney was beautiful, smart, and a little sassy. She was trying her hardest to seduce the single preacher at every turn. When Eve, Dorothy Mae, and Mamie got wind of this, let's just say...all Hell broke loose! Will Terrance see the light or will Savannah become The Pastor's Wife?

ReShonda Tate Billingsley has done it again. The Pastor's Wife is a true page turner. With each page, it made you want to get to the next. I enjoyed the way the book flowed and it never got off course. You could imagine their facial expressions and the sound of their voices by the way the author detailed each character. If you loved Let the Church Say Amen, then you'll love The Pastor's Wife.

5.0 out of 5 stars "We are all created equal", May 19, 2009
This review is from: The Pastor's Wife (Paperback)
Yes, even Christians are created equally!!
ReShonda is a great writer; I've enjoyed majority of her work. This book is no different. She takes her time to develop the story and the characters are...well just that - CHARACTERS!

The story is great, no different than protective family members over 'an untouched or clean thing' - they were just 'protecting their nephew (although their methods were drastic)They simply wanted to protect their vested interest (Terrance & the church)Savannah is no different than any other woman who attempts to 'get at' a good brother [using drastic measures; I do believe that she really liked Terrance; despite her past & her conniving ways; (she's simply a product of her upbringing)]

The ending has a twist to it though regarding who Terrance ends up with b/c it just proves that "In life we're always 'searching for the ONE & sometimes 'the one' has been there all alone & knows us better than we know ourselves!"

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book, April 14, 2009
This review is from: The Pastor's Wife (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book. There wasn't a dull moment throughout the whole book. I found myself trying to read a chapter at every free minute that I had. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a really good story. They should possibly make a movie out of it. I'm sure it would make for a great dramatic church drama story.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very fun read, October 14, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Pastor's Wife (Paperback)
For my part, I really enjoyed the Pastor's Wife. While fictional in content, there is a great deal of truth in these pages. It does illustrate some of drama that women and men deal with while being Christians, trying to do the right thing and managing to remain in the world and not of the world as they taught me in Sunday school. I found the characters to be pretty well fleshed out and human to the point that I could see some of my aunts and uncles in the men and women folk in the book. The writing in my opinion made me feel like I was in the room standing on somebody's shoulder watching as the events unfolded. It is true that the need for a Pastor to be happily married is a very big thing for any church that is firmly rooted in the community. And it is only natural for older men and women that are left to watch over a sister or cousins child to ensure that everything, I mean everything goes well as if the parents never left them home. If you like fun drama, with a few twists and turns, and some down home humor then you might try this book. The author has written several other good books as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Take Thee, Please Take Me, July 25, 2008
This review is from: The Pastor's Wife (Paperback)
Pastor Terrance Ellis was minding his own business while handling church duties. But as a single man people are going to think something is wrong when you are not dating or doesn't have a wife. Being raised by three women who are faithful church members and Christians, the pastor finds himself in situation after situation with his aunts trying to play the match maker. Unfortunately for Terrance his aunts want him to find the perfect Christian woman, but the pastor finds him self attracted to Samantha McKinney. Considered the church tramp, why would a prominent pastor be interested in someone like this is a question not only for his aunts but for the church body? Samantha wants the pastor and sets out to seduce him. Being the new first lady of Lily Grove Church would change her life.

I enjoyed Reshonda Tate Billingsley story telling about the preacher and his search for love. This novel is certainly filled with drama, a fast read and a page turner. I highly recommend this funny, yet serious take on a church who wants their pastor to have a wife.

4.0 out of 5 stars So Like Us!, June 30, 2008
This review is from: The Pastor's Wife (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book by Mrs Billingsley. I read it in one day and totally understood how Terrence felt about his aunts. You want to stay respectful to your elders but at the same time receive the same respect you give. I thought Savannah was like alot of young girls born to young, poor mothers. They don't know what to do and then there is no one there to show them right, ie Savannah's grandmother. I couldnt wait to see what the secret was that Terrence was hiding, and I really thought his secretary was going to be killed. I am so glad they ended up together. I can't wait to grab the other novels by Reshonda.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not my favorite book - but still very good, June 12, 2008

This review is from: The Pastor's Wife (Paperback)
I love this author. I can only compare her to her previous works because she is one of my favorite. That said, this is not my favorite but it is still a good read. Good story line, well developed characters. It felt a little rushed at times which is the reason I give it 4 stars. Other than that it is a must read.

This was a fast read for me. I could not put this book down. That doggone Savannah. She had more than a few screws loose. From the time that I read that she overhead Terrance's confession, I was losing my mind trying to read and find out what is was. This is a wonderful read. Very quick and enjoyable.
