All The Family Favorites,
By
This review is from: Pastors Wives Cookbook (Plastic Comb)
Twenty-nine years ago my mother-in-law gave me this cookbook since, at that time, I was a new bride, a new cook and a new pastor's wife! She had also given me the "bible" of cooking, "The Joy of Cooking". My mom had given me the "Betty Crocker Cookbook". Both were helpful as far as skills and basics. Since then I've collected numerous cookbooks from renowned chefs, various regions and even other "church ladies" cookbooks but there is no other cookbook from which the recipes bring about the raves and sighs of comfort from my family in the way this one does!Unlike some cookbooks, the recipe arrangement and organization makes sense. The recipes utilize ingredients with which most American cooks, especially Southern ones, are familiar. One special feature is a section of favorite recipes from guests: Mamie Eisenhower, Pat Nixon, Betty Ford, Rosalynn Carter, Ruth Bell Graham, to name a few). If you need a punch recipe ("Christmas Punch" is a favorite), an appetizer ("Rosalynn Carter's 'Plains Special' Cheese Ring"), a good Southern congealed salad ("Nell's Apricot Salad"), a main dish ("Chili Delicious" or "Baked Spaghetti") or a Dessert ("Mississippi Mud Cake" or "Buttermilk Pie") they're all here. This is the kind of cookbook that you can use when you're thinking of a family dinner or a church supper and want just the right crowd-pleasing dish. Five years ago, when my oldest daughter got married, I bought a copy and annotated it with all the family favorites. Sure, I've given her all of Martha's cookbooks since, but we always go back to this one for good food and memories. I have another daughter getting married in January. You can be sure she'll have a copy!

My grandmother gave me my first copy of this cookbook many years ago. You can spot the best recipes by the stains on the pages. Sweet Potato Pie is our ultimate favorite recipe. I bought this copy to replace my missing copy. I recommend this book to anyone looking for good Southern cooking!

This is one of the best cookbooks for a family or just a couple or anyone who likes to cook. I liked this cookbook so much I gave a copy to my mother-in-law for mothers day and both of my daughters for Christmas. My mother-in-law said it had so many receips that could be whipped up in a short time, yet were so delicious. It covers all different kind of dishes. Just good everyday cooking. Wonderful!!!
