5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for begining prairie buffs!!, May 19, 2005

This review is from: Pasture and Range Plants (Hardcover)
I have had a copy of this book since 1977. It has excellent color plates with the identifying features of each plant detailed with an inserted blow-up. It does not have every plant you will find in a prairie or pasture, but it has many of the more common ones - seperated out into grasses (native and introduced), legumes, and forbs. It also has a section on poisonous plants and tells in the descriptions if the plants are annuals, perennials, and if the plant is palatable or not, along with other useful information. I recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Who Knew?, January 7, 2010
This review is from: Pasture and Range Plants (Hardcover)
Who knew this beautiful and useful book existed?

Phillips Petroleum produced this, in conjunction with Fort Hays Kansas State College in 1963; it was reprinted into the 70's and perhaps later. In the mid-1950's, Phillips printed partial individual chapters of the book as pamphlets.

At any rate, the 1963 hardcover is a quality book: pictorial black cloth over hardback boards with a sewn binding on heavy paper. 178 pp, color illustrations on just about every page. Bibliography. Alphabetical List of Plant Names (scientific and common.)

The painter or painters who created these illustrations yielded great old school botanical images: rich, color illustrations set on matte black backgrounds with a lot of detail and texture including inset "closeup" views.

The organization here is simple: Grasses, Legumes, Forbs, Woody Plants and Miscellaneous Poisonous Plants.
