The original IN A METAL MOOD NO MORE MR. NICE GUY, February 19, 2012
This review is from: Pat Boone Sings Guess Who? (Audio CD)
Album dates about March, 1963. Songs:
Love Me/Teddy Bear/Hound Dog/All Shook Up/One Night/Wear My Ring Around Your Neck/Love Me Tender/Don't Be Cruel/Blue Suede Shoes/My Baby Left Me/Heartbreak Hotel/It's Now or Never
This on vinyl Lp is probably one of his only (the other being BOSS BEAT, Dot DLP 3594/25594) post-'62 albums that any vinyl junkie would consider paying something like retail to acquire, and for its kitsch interest (would you really want to hear his version of "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport"?). An unsuspecting rock 'n roll fan hearing this SINGS GUESS WHO album might be disappointed to outraged, were he thinking that Boone would play the Elvis rockers "straight." No, he's backed by a small combo lounge smooth jazz outfit playing a style similar to period George Shearing, and Boone yucks up his vocals, playing around with them. If you've heard IN A METAL MOOD, you'll pick up a similar vibe with this album, with less brassy orchestra.
If you want to explore (why? why?) 1960s' Booney Tunes rockers, I suggest a UK comp, PAT BOONE HITS OF THE 60S, which has a lot of the tracks from his 1964 BOSS BEAT rock covers album (he does the Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand" --almost as bad as the New Christy Minstrels' version). The BOSS BEAT tracks were recorded with an instrumental band lineup led by David Gates, later of the group, Bread. Oh, yeah, Glen Campbell is somewhere in that instrumental mix (BOSS BEAT).
