PreSchool-- Adults looking for new ideas for interactive play with babies and toddlers will appreciate this step-by-step introduction to play rhymes. Old favorites are included along with some newer rhymes, and some familiar ones are put to imaginative use. The 30 selections are organized according to parts of the body and each is accompanied by several pen-and-ink illustrations with watercolor washes depicting a child and adult performing the actions. Tiegreen captures the loving interactions, but the similarities in facial expressions in the adults is slightly annoying. While the rhymes themselves will appeal to babies, the illustrations are geared to adults, and the book functions more as a how-to manual than a read-aloud. Marc Brown's Hand Rhymes (1985) and Finger Rhymes (1987, both Dutton) and Carol Ra's Trot, Trot to Boston (Lothrop, 1987), beautifully illustrated by Catherine Stock, are better choices to share with children. --Ruth Smith, formerly at Chicago Pub . My daughter craved stimulation as an infant. She loved simple finger play games such as pat-a-cake, but I couldn't remember the words or hand motions to many others (how DO you get from a steeple to a church full of people?). When I went to our local bookstore in search of a book on finger play rhymes and directions, the clerk couldn't praise this book enough. Joanna Cole's books are EXTREMELY easy to understand, with step by step caricatures picturing hand placement and motion. My now three year old daughter enjoys looking through the book as well as singing the songs. This book comes highly recommended.

Babies and young children love and benefit from hearing rhymes. Rhymes matched with movement supports a natural tendency in language acquistion. This book is divided into finger-and-hand rhymes, toe-and-foot rhymes, face rhymes, tickling rhymes, knee-and-foot-riding rhymes, and dancing rhymes, which just about covers it from now until your child is off to school! this book containes great action songs to do with babies and toddlers. not exactly great for a 3 year old classroom, but fun for a "two of us" calss. I was expecting finger plays. Maybe I read the description wrong.
