"The Juicing Bible" seems to have been written for a very specific audience. If you have a well stocked cupboard filled with spices and a garden filled with herbs then this book might be what you are looking for. After looking through the entire book I found one recipe I could actually make without searching in a health store for uncommon ingredients. The recipe I tried was the "Apple Spice Cocktail." This used ingredients I had in my refrigerator and instead of the spices recommended I just used cinnamon. So in a way I created my own recipe based on a good idea.

Some of the ingredients in this book include: lavender, powdered licorice, dandelions, powdered linden flower, borage leaves, acai berries, red raspberry leaves, stinging nettle, kelp, astragalus root, meadowsweet and apricot milk. While I've heard of these ingredients before I have no idea where to get them. The small sources section at the back of the book doesn't really give me any clues as to who carries which herbs. Most of the spices used in this book can however be found at your local grocery store.

This book is divided into 8 main sections which include:

Healthy Body Systems - A brief discussion of the endocrine system, immune system, musculoskeletal system, nervous system and respiratory system. There is a short discussion of hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, arthritis, osteoporosis, muscle spasms, anxiety, depression, memory loss, asthma and allergies.

Health Conditions - This is a comprehensive section organized alphabetically. It discusses things like cancer prevention, headaches, indigestion and water retention.
Each illness is discussed and remedies are given. The remedies include healing foods and herbs. Healing drinks are listed at the end of each section.

I own a juice and smoothie bar and have a lot of customers who look for new and delicious juice and smoothie specials. I bought this book hoping to get some fresh ideas and combinations. While the author does offer some nice combos, ALL of them are complicated, requiring one to make a tea of some obscure sort, then blend in something else. All of this is total pain. It makes all these offerings seem more like medicine than food.
Another thing-there are NO YIELDS ANYWHERE! So one juice will make 4 ounces, another will make 8-10. I'd expect some variation based on the age of the fruits and veggies but these recipes are all over the place.
It would be useful to have a note attached to each juice recipe with whatever nutritional benefits can be had by drinking it. Such as-cleansing, good for UTIs, full of vitamin C, hearty and filling, packed with anti-oxidants, etc. As published, you have to look up all the different ingredients in the previous chapters to find the nutritional benefits-confusing and a hassle.

I bought this book as a beginner's guide to juicing. I used it in addition to another juicing book. I don't normally purchase 90% of the herbs and other speciality ingredients so this was a bit overwhelming for me. I wanted to try juicing to start a healthier lifestyle and was hoping it would be affordable, but following these recipes would have cost me a fortune. Interesting read, but not practical for me. I needed something with garden-variety normal ingredients to encourage me to get into juicing.

Most juicing books are, well, silly. Full of magical thinking, misinformation, and light on useful information. This book is different, containing everything you need to get started, and enough information to guide you in developing your own recipes and diet plans.

The Good
- complete
- well organized (can find anything in a minute or so)
- intelligently written by someone who knows what they are talking about
- many delicious recipes
- huge variety of recipes
- fun

Unlike most juice books, this book has good information (both nutritional and medicinal). It also has: good introductory information for people just getting started, nicely laid out chapters on fruits and vegetables, really good indexing so you can lookup an ingredient and see list of recipes which use it, or lookup an ailment and see a list of recipes that might be helpful. It contains some very tasty recipes with clear directions for preparation. There are also beautiful color photos which are fun to page through and encouraged me to try new recipes.

Bonus: fun recipes for spritzers, smoothies, cocktails, frozen treats

Could be better:

One thing that could be improved: Listing nutritional information for juices at least at the ingredient level. For example, how much sugar is in 1c of carrot juice, vs. 1c of zucchini juice? How much B12 is in spinach juice vs. apple juice? This kind of reference information would be very useful for diet planing. So far, I have not found a good reference for this, but it would fit nicely in a future edition of this book (add a little nutrition table to each ingredient)

This book is good for people with a passing interest in juicing, NOT for people fasting on a juice diet. Many of the recipes are very good but call for store bought juice. I have juice several times in the past and can adjust the recipes, it would be hard pressed for a new to fasting to adjust. I wanted to give two stars, but, I thought seeing how the over all recipes were good and varied I would bump it up. The recipes are tasty and varied. But be warned if you are using this for fasting, do NOT use store bought juice as this calls for, you will be fighting hunger pains.
