Book Description

April 26, 2011
A macabre mash-up of the children’s classic Pat the Bunny and the present-day zombie phenomenon, with the tactile features of the original book revoltingly re-imagined for an adult audience.

In the hemorrhagic vein of other zombie parodies, Pat the Zombie presents trusting toddler Judy playing peek-a-boo with a putrefying Paul. Grownup fans of Pat the Bunny (seven million of them) will find their favorite touch-and-feel features disturbingly re-created: Judy reaches for Zombie’s decaying jaw instead of daddy’s cheek; Paul caresses Mummy’s empty eye socket instead of her wedding ring. Ximm’s twisted wit, Soofi’s sick artistic sensibility, and clever packaging that mimics the original book will bring the undead lurchingly to life in this camp popculture romp.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious Spoof for the Un-faint of Heart April 28, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
In a recent review of the film "Stake Land," Roger Ebert notes:

"Zombies are a great convenience. They provide villains who are colorful and frightening, require no dialogue, motivation or explanation, and yet function efficiently as a negation of all that is good. Just the very word "zombie" can persuade people to buy tickets for a movie, and "sex" hasn't done that in years."

Ebert, in short, is intimately familiar with the vast sprawling subculture of zombie-land, and that is maybe one prerequisite for enjoying "Pat the Zombie" in the full richness of its zombie-land tropes.

The other prerequisite, of course, is to be one of the millions of parents who offered soft bunny fur, daddy's scratchy face, and other tactile treats in "Pat the Bunny" to their children at bed time. Or had that experience offered as one sat on a parent's lap, all those years ago.

As someone who qualifies on both counts - I have, contrary to my own expectations of myself as a mature adult, watched "Shaun of the Dead" several times - I found this "cruel spoof," as indeed it is, remarkably well done, well-written and well-drawn, a faithful recreation of the original mindless narrative but in the world of tasty brains and walkabouts of the undead.

The finesse with which this fun excursion splices the dark neighborhood overrun by a rising tide of zombies with memories of the original bunny book is like one of those cool moves in "Kill Bill," beautifully conceived but appreciated even more if you like the movies Tarentino loved. The expression OMG! did escape my lips a couple of times, but that's the point. This book does exactly what it intends. If you think the Onion is right up there with the Daily Show and liked "Hot Fuzz" or "Airplane"--if you laughed during the latter when passengers lined up to smack a hysterical woman back into reality--you'll love Pat the Zombie.

I laugh every time I see that scene. As I laugh each time I turned a page, with trembling and fear, of this little gem.

This book is incredible! Funny, likeable and totally kooky. Maybe not suited for kids as some of the illustrations are graphic. But for a zombie fan, its amazing :-)
