Patagonia Stand Up Shorts, September 18, 2010
I've been using Patagonia Light Weight Stand Up Short for over 30 years. They're still the greatest shorts ever made.

I have worn these canvas shorts for years. They are the best and most comfortable shorts made.

Best there is. <-Period., July 11, 2011

Long-wearing, and the superiority is subtle enough that most people won't notice that you're wearing superhero gear, so you won't be called to be rescuing babies or piloting the aircraft to a safe landing all the time. People at Camp 4 in Yosemite won't even notice, unless yours are brand new.
Pocket config is weird at first and then becomes the best ever once you see what it can accommodate. For example, I can put my Android phone or notebook in one of the back pockets and still sit down by shifting it to the outside, this is way better than having it bang against the outside of my leg like it would with cargo shorts, or sitting down on it because I put it in a conventional back pocket. Those rear pockets will hold a cordless drill, a handful of fasteners, a bucnh of hand tools, a notebook, an extra lens for my camera...they don't look the part, they ARE the part.
These are the default in the summer, whether I'm hiking, gardening, working on something, or just going to town.
The 5" inseam ones are so short that the front pockets will hang out if you put stuff in them, the 7's are about as perfect as you can get. One other great feature is a button closure on the waist. Why Royal Robbins, Columbia, etc. are using snaps is beyond me, but I when I find a snap closure (even on sale cheap cheap) they go right back on the rack.
