1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, at best
I have been a Mitford fan for a long time. I read the first four books in the series, and anxiously awaited the next visit with all of my favorite characters in Mitford. I have been disappointed in the last three books, and I hate this! Patches of Godlight did have some of my favorite quotes from the first books, but after several pages, it seemed to be the same thing,...

I stumbled on the Mitford series a few years ago and have since recommended, loaned and purchased these books for many family members, friends and friends of friends. What an oasis of serenity, wisdom and spirituality Ms. Karon's books offer in an ocean of uncertainty. She doesn't avoid life's challenges (friendship, love, death, illness, alcoholism, homelessness, for example), but addresses them in a way that gives readers hope for their own lives. "Patches of Godlight" is a book that you can pick up again and again, open to any page, and come away filled with hope and optimism. This is a perfect addendum to "The Mitford Series" and a perfect Christmas gift (along with "The Mitford Snowmen") for "Jan's fans."

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a must have!, September 13, 2001

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My copy arrived on September 12 - the day after the "Attack on America." What a blessing. For those of you who have read all of Jan Karon's Mitford series and admired her work, owning this book is a must! Throughout the series, Father Timothy Kavanagh has shared his wisdom and his heart through quotes for the famous and not-so-famous. This book is a collection of thoughts forloving and living. Thank you, Father Tim.

To those of you who haven't discovered the Mitford series, get going! At this time of national tragedy, the folks in Mitford will restore your faith in humankind.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm glad she wrote this!, September 29, 2001
By A Customer
I'm a huge Jan Karon fan. This is going to be a great book to give as a Christmas gift to family and friends, sort of a condensing of a lot of the wisdom I've read in all her books. I'm also a prodigious fan of Homer Hickam, perfect for Jan fans who hunger for stories of small towns, great characters, and chuckles and tears. Just finished Homer's Sky of Stone. Wow, is all I can say. Two great series - Mitford and Coalwood forever!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a book of quotes without the gristle and fat, October 22, 2002
By
tim keane (Chalfont, PA) - See all my reviews
The title caught my eye as I was browsing in an airport store between flights. I opened the book and found an interesting quote, then another and another.

Books of quotations are often like the frozen chicken nuggets, packaged with good chicken mixed with a lot of fat and gristle.
This book is different. The quotes were all thought provoking and inspirational.

I've read some other coffee table quote books and found them mostly full of gobblety-goop with some good verse through in for measure. The only thought provoking part of these books was wondering how quickly the author had gotten all of these useless quotations together to make his fast buck.

Many of the quotes in Patches of Godlight I had not seen elsewhere. While I didn't buy the book for business purposes I immediately used one of the quotes to begin my seminar that afternoon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Faith -- The Foundation Of Mitford, April 28, 2002
This book of quotes is a wonderful reflection of the Christian faith with which Jan Karon creates her characters and writes the wonderful Mitford books which we all love so much. While many quotes are well known, not all are "commonplace." The advertising/marketing background of Karon does at first appear gimmicky and even quick to make cash. Realistically, I think she is simply a gifted writer who is able to take advantage of expanding her market -- not just for profit. This book makes a great gift and is an inspirational source to return to again and again. These quotes are the bones behind the books. Karon's faith is real and readable -- see whom she get's her inspiration from.

4.0 out of 5 stars If You Like Quotes You'll Love This Book!, January 8, 2003
By
A. Moore (IN United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Patches of Godlight: Father Tim's Favorite Quotes (Mitford Years) (Paperback)
This is the only book I have read from this author, and I really enjoyed this book. It is not something I would have probably selected and read on my own... it was given to me by a friend, so I gave it a try and found it to be delightful.

The book is basically a collection of quotations from a variety of religous, political and social leaders. If you are like me and enjoy reading or collecting quotations, you will find this book to be very entertaining.

The book is written in a "journal" format, in handwritten script with one to four quotes per page. The quotes, although being geared to christianity are not exclusively religious. They are thought provoking, smile creating and varied in content and tone. The book is a just one of those books that makes you "feel good" to read.

I would have liked this book to be a little longer... with even more quotations, which is why I din't give it 5 stars. It is a very short and easy read, so enjoy it while it lasts!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Sermons or Speeches, October 31, 2001
By A Customer
I am a seminary student and ordered this book after a friend in my Greek language class recommended it to me. This is the kind of book I would give to the pastors in my family. The quotations in here can spice up any speech or sermon and are perfect for devotional reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spiritual Delight, July 20, 2005
By
Avid Reader (Palouse, WA, USA) - See all my reviews
Anyone who is a fan of Father Tim and his Chrisitian insights and appreciates the wisdom of others that he finds in his life, will appreciate Jan Karon's clever presentation in this book. Pretty enough for your table, whether coffe or bedside, this little book is a jewel. One really feels that you have something of Father Tim's own journal, and you share some private and special insight into the thoughts of Mitford's best-loved shepherd of souls. From the first flyleaf where Father Tim writes his name, through the post-it notes and asides written in the margins, this is uplifting reading whenever the need for a great thought arises. Adding to the uniqueness of the volume are several blank pages at the end to which the reader can add personal quotes and insights. All of the the publishing information is placed at the end of the journal also. The volume makes a great gift for special friends that share your life and the love of the Mitford series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than bartletts quotations!, April 6, 2005
By
This review is from: Patches of Godlight: Father Tim's Favorite Quotes (Mitford Years) (Paperback)
I'm often looking for a quote to include in a toast, a note or even an invitation... I've checked out the standard quotation books and they are stilted in their organization and even when there's a fairly straightforward subject (babies, for a congratulatory note, for example) the quotations are mundane and uninspiring. This book is different.
It collects thoughts on things like reading, life, letter writing, love, service, death and lots on prayer and God. You'll be surprised how often you reach for it when writing! Plus it's a great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anybody could get a lift out of this . . ., March 26, 2005
This review is from: Patches of Godlight: Father Tim's Favorite Quotes (Mitford Years) (Paperback)
A wonderful collection of quotes, especially meaningfully to Christians. Totally and completely worth your time whether you've read anything else by Karon or not. My guess is that the sequel does not quite measure up.
