Simple but pretty,
By Cerulean Blue (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Patchwork Style: 35 Simple Projects for a Cozy and Colorful Life (Make Good: Crafts + Life) (Paperback)
This book is pretty. Very pretty. The photography, the patterns, the book design. All pretty. So as an inspiration book, this gets 5 stars. As a pattern book, eh, knock it back to 3. The designs are all very simple, many very similar to others on the market, simply modified to be more "patchwork-y". Anyone with basic sewing skills could figure out quite a few of these patterns on their own. However, not everyone has an interest in doing the math to make their own patterns and these are all clearly written out for you. The fact that they are also now translated into English is a big bonus. For that reason, for a newer sewer or someone less accustom to deciphering japanese patterns, this book will be a real treat. I suggest flipping through the pages at a local B&N before deciding if its worth your time. I don't know that I would have payed full price at said B&N but personally, I found that even as just an inspiration book, it was well worth the Amazon price.

I've long been an admirer of Japanese sewing and craft books, so I was very excited to see one published in English. I borrowed it, made two projects, and decided that I needed a copy for my own. The projects are very simple, instructions easy to follow, and the beautiful photography is a source of inspiration. Each time I pick it up I find a new project to make, or a fabric combination, or a fresh look I was to re-create in fabric.

Originales, divertidos y contemporáneos diseños. La explicación no es muy clara, aunque no son proyectos complicados, lo básico es la combinación de telas y elementos que les ofrecen un toque distinto a bolsos, colchas,... y demàs.

Not up to expectations,

Given the popularity of this book in the original Japanese, I had pretty high expectations. But overall I found the patterns pretty simple and there isn't anything that I'm excited to do. Its pretty, but I'm not sure it was worth the hype.

I have only read this - not sewn anything yet - but the reading was good. Instructions are clear. Not for a beginning seamstress, in my opinion.

This book may be interesting to some crafters, but it did not flow with my tastes in fabrics or styles. This is my first "Japanese" crafting book and I didn't find the projects inspiring except for one--the floor mat. I did take the idea and run with it in my own way, but wasn't inspired to use their techniques or style. The photos are all kind of strange and in very cool colors. Again, maybe lovely to some, not to me. I read through it and put it down and haven't really felt like picking it back up again. If you like edgy, mismatchy, 1970s vintage styles, this book might be for you.

The photographs in this book make me think about what I can make, so I have appreciated the inspiration.
