Editorial Reviews

Review

"The authors have made a creditable attempt at a difficult subject. Even the experienced searcher for whom much of the practice is "instinctive" will benefit from a careful consideration of this book." (World Patent Journal, Sept 2007)

From the Inside Flap

Patent searches before prosecution help improve the defensibility of the future patent, and can dissuade the inventor from prosecuting at all. In our litigious society, the pre-examination preparation by an inventor, patent attorney, agent, or searcher can save the patent owner much time and money later on. But while quality patent searching is vital to intellectual property law, there are very few resources available on how an intellectual property professional should conduct a patent search. Patent Searching: Tools & Techniques provides a practical guide to the art and science of this task, along with essential information on patent law, patent search theory, and practice.

Editor David Hunt and his team of contributors at Landon IP, Inc.—one of the largest privately held patent search, analysis, and consulting firms in the United States—have drawn on their experience working for approximately 2,000 companies and 1,000 IP law firms to create an indispensable reference to patent searching procedures and techniques. They detail key principles and approaches that will work regardless of the specific tools you use, covering everything from the basic types of patent searches (including patentability, validity, infringement, clearance, state-of-the-art, and patent landscape) to the mechanics of searching, patent analysis, reporting search results, and more.

While the Internet has made simple searching easy, the volume of information available has in many ways made it less focused and harder to interpret findings. Patent Searching: Tools & Techniques helps professionals avoid information overload and identify just the information they need. It outlines criteria on how to select the most appropriate search tools and even provide current information on the major databases available. And with an abundance of illustrative tables, charts, and figures, this book makes complex material easy to read and understand.

Whether you're a patent examiner, patent attorney, commercial patent searcher, patent liaison, IP librarian, law professor, or competitive intelligence analyst, you'll find Patent Searching: Tools & Techniques to be just the guide you have been waiting for, with a range of approaches to patent searching that will be useful to you regardless of your technical expertise or role in the intellectual property community.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-organized, well written, useful book June 2, 2007
By Skip
Format:Hardcover
I bought this book on a whim, thinking that as an experienced patent searcher for over 10 years, it wouldn't teach me anything. I WAS WRONG! This book is very well organized and will be useful to the novice as well as the experiences searcher. I actually learned a number of useful techniques and tools and am recommending this book to my colleagues. Finally, a book that has pertinent complex information in one place for easy reference. Mr. Hunt is to be congratulated for his unambiguous writing style and format. Kudos to Amazon for letting me know it was available. Thanks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not many books out there like this !!! March 13, 2008
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was looking for a good book to learn concepts on patent-searching, and this book--after a long search--satisfied my need. This book explains theoretical concepts behind patent searching and analytics, tells how to extract ideas from forward and backward citation, and pros-and-cons of online databases. I have read some books from NOLO, but they teach about online tools only, and such tools are obsolete by the time of finishing reading the book. This is the only book to go for as of March 2008.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent primer on patent searching April 18, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
The authors filled a great need with this book: building a protocol for searching patent literature. For something so widespread and important, there are few resources available to learn how. This book does an excellent job of teaching the reader to frame a query and start a search using keywords and classification. It also has useful, but less comprehensive sections on making reports. It's generally difficult to find other resources to learn those two topics. There is a long way you can go from the starting points they give you, but at least you have those starting points now.
I found the introduction to patents and suggestions for tools less useful, because that information is very easy to find and the tools (searching software) are constantly changing with consolidations and new possibilities.
