Book Description

April 19, 2004

Tap into the genius of Boyd Epley, founder of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and the University of Nebraska's storied Husker Power program. The Path to Athletic Power provides unique insight into the evolution of modern sports conditioning, how it was significantly influenced by the developments in Epley's highly successful program, and the best and most current version of that program, so you too can build superior athletes.

Epley's 10 conditioning principles provide the foundation for big-time success on the field or court. Draw on the same methods he's used to develop three Heisman Trophy winners, eight Outland Trophy winners, and 300 athletes who moved on to play in the NFL or win national, world, or Olympic titles. From training three-dimensional movement to using split routines, his innovative workouts have produced exceptional gains in power, strength, and speed.

With the help of step-by-step explanations and exclusive insights appearing in print for the first time, you'll be able to design a state-of-the-art conditioning plan, complete with in-season, off-season, and multisport programs. Draw on Epley's wealth of knowledge, experience, and success for sure footing and fast progress on the path to athletic power!

5.0 out of 5 stars Weight Training for ATHLETES, February 10, 2011
This review is from: Path to Athletic Power:Model Conditioning Program for Champ Perf (Paperback)
This is the best book I have ever read concerning weight training for athletic development. I am a C.S.C.S, have a Master's Degree in Exercise Physiology, have earned various certificates through personal training organizations, and have coached weight training and football for over 20 years. I don't pretend to know everything but one thing I can guarantee is that this is an outstanding book by a legend in the field of strength training and conditioning for ATHLETES. This book is very informative from a scientific point of view and the program that is recommended is extremely logical and easy to follow. It will take a lot of initiative on the part of the coach to organize. The program is a 4-day split format that contains two explosive lifting days and two strength lifting days per week and progresses from beginner to intermediate through advanced levels. If you or your athletes are not slackers you will see some very good results.I had read Complete Conditioning for Football written by Coach Epley's assistants at Nebraska and had a lot of success following that program with my athletes. I bought this book when it first became available and have blended the two programs ever since. My athletes like the program and progress well in the olympic lifts and in their squatting ability. They don't seem to get that strong as they would like in their bench press but that may be related to genetic issues or something that we're not doing. I like this book so much because it pertains to training for athletic improvement and not bodybuilding. If you are looking to implement a quality program to build athletes this and the other book I mentioned previously are definitely the two places to start. I have heard numerous strength coaches at the university and professional levels speak and have read every book I can get my hands on concerning weight training and I can say without reservation that no one has ever done it better using a no gimmicks nuts and bolts approach than Boyd Epley. The success of Coach Osborne's legendary Nebraska power football teams were directly related to Coach Epley's legendary Nebraska weight training program.Your team will benefit too if you are dedicated as a coaching staff and are willing to put in one to two hours a day for your athletes. You will get what YOU emphasize.
