Review

James Stever's ambitious and successful work draws organizational thought into the broad context of political theory... -- Professor Frederick Homer, University of Wyoming

From the Author

This book is a cross section of my experience. Numerous people have taken this project seriously, and I thank them for their kindness. Sage Publications granted me permission to adapt an article published in Administration & Society (Technology,Organization, Freedom: The Organizational Theory of John Dewey, Volume 24, No. 4, February, 1993). This article, conceived early one Saturday morning on the Washington, DC, Metro, helped me to appreciate the dependency of the modern citizenry on organizations for their freedom.

At the University of Cincinnati, students in my political theory seminars helped me think through the relationships between the modern state and the modern organization. I am particularly indebted to Wylie Jones, Craig Cobane, Gerson Moreno-Riano, and Nicholas Damask who subjected the central idea of the books last chapter, meltdown, to extensive criticism.

R.W. Trewyn, a biochemist, deftly linked postmodern philosophy to postmodern science by explaining the scientific premises behind chaos theory and entropy. With this linkage, I was able to appreciate the broader relationships between quantum physics, chaos theory and postmodern social thought.

This project acquired form and substance thanks to a timely symposium on Organizational Skepticism published by MCB University Press in the Journal of Management History (Volume 4, Issue 4, 1998). Jack Rabin was essential for the success of this symposium. Rachel Dobson guided the symposium through a myriad of publishing details. The authors who submitted articles for this symposium not only developed the concept of organizational skepticism, but subjected my taxonomy of organizational skepticism to unremitting, valuable criticism. These authors are: Larry Terry, Gerald Gabris, Douglas Ihrke, Stephen Maclin, Deena and Michael Weinstein, Norman Wright, David K. Hart. I would also like to thank George Frederickson for introducing me to the idea of organizational aesthetics.

Frederick Homer is an enduring friend and colleague. He listened early on, introduced me to Primo Levi, and deftly steered me toward an understanding of the broader implications of the organizational skepticism concept. Fred graciously interrupted his schedule to write the forward to this book.

The book is dedicated jointly to Michael and Deena Weinstein who have accomplished the fusion of political philosophy and organizational theory. Decades ago, they anticipated the inevitable dependency of modernity on the modern organization. It was their pioneering scholarship and research that inspired this book.

Finally, I must acknowledge the influence of my wife, Cynthia, on this bookherself an accomplished executive in a modern organization. She shared, corrected, listened, and encouraged throughout this project. Without her help, this book would not have been possible.
