Think weezer, pixies, nirvana, green day, guided by voices, built to spill and elvis costello all locked up in joey ramone's garage with one guitar, bass, drum set, two mics and a mountain of speed. they've been given one week to write the worlds best pop record. they don't get any nookie until it's complete with a stamp of apporval from mr. ronnie spector himself. one week elapses and out rolls a giagantic 22 headed rock beast hurling the best pop hooks, original melodies, classic harmonies, and sassy lyrics you could possibly imagine. the rock world will never be the same. buy this CD or suffer the consequences. the beast knows where you live and has his eye on your little sister.

After the second time through this album, I was possessed to play this album as much as possible. But to not too much, I don't want the magic to go! In under thirty minutes, The Librarians mix straight ahead pre-hardcore punk with clever lyrics which are about all the standard stuff (booze, girls, & being a rockstar). The sheer undercooked and amateur feel (make no mistake these guys know what they are doing) of the songs totally clicks with what it is about obscure rock that makes it so special. It just makes me smile with its clever smartass lyric meets rock hook formula. The Hives just imagine they are this good! So what does it sound like? Strip down the presidents to their raw core and graft early costello to the engine. Highlights? "Peace and Quiet" with its athemic lambasting of "squares", "Rockstar" with its snide groupie comments and inciteful chorus, "Thank you for ...me" with its sarastic and cynical take on collegiate love and "... On Your Party" for its nearly Ween-like crudeness and compassion about relationships in collapse. Singer Ryan also finds great vocal counterpoint guitarist Damon Larson at various points in the album that shows they could do the standard boring indierock thing. One more note has to be made about the unlisted track. Simply hilarious! It takes the whole band up break-up thing and boils it down to pure comedy. This band is not as simplistic as they like to make themselves to be. What a refreshing change! Better any number of pop-punk bands you could trot out.

saw these guys the other day with someone called "extreme elvis". I must tell you, he was extreem. However, no one seems to be able to top the Librarians live. Not even the King himself, now in extreme form, can touch the raw energy these guys put out. I wish there were more bands like this and I hope they all stay slightly below the radar of the masses.
