After a long wait, it's here, the guide to races in Pathfinder.

First off (p.6-76), there are racial traits, alternate racial traits, and new rules for the Core races: Dwarves, Elves, Gnomes, Half-elves, Half-orcs, Halflings, Humans. An example alternate racial trait: Halflings are sure-footed. Some are excellent riders instead, so can give up sure-footed to gain +2 on Handle animal and Ride.

Pages 80-174 are the Featured Races: Aasimars Catfolk Dhampirs Drow Fetchlings Goblins Hobgoblins Ifrits Kobolds Orcs Oreads Ratfolk Sylphs Tengus Tieflings Undines.

Pages 180-210 are the Uncommon Races: Changelings Duergar Gillmen Gripplis Kitsune Merfolk Nagaji Samsarans Strix Sulis Svirfneblin Vanaras Vishkanyas Wayangs. Several of these are on the "bizarre" side of things.

Pages 212-241 are a Race Builder section. Various racial traits are given a number of Racial Points for their general advantageousness, and it's suggested that campaigns played at certain levels can handle player races of a given number of racial points. As examples, races like Centaurs (28 RP), Gnolls (6 RP), and Lizardfolk (8 RP) are given, built with the race builder rules. Using the same system Dwarves (11 RP), Elves (10 RP) -- all the various races get a build broken down by points.

And various tables for ages, heights, weights, and so forth. All the races are fit within the Pathfinder world with motivations and possible backgrounds.

Recommended for Pathfinder players. This is a good sourcebook.

I wasn't sure if this book was needed or not: Pathfinder thrives best without a lot of unnecessary classes, Feats, etc. But I must say Paizo has done a wonderful job of keeping this game fresh. New classes? Not so many. Instead in other works (Ultimate Combat, etc) we get class archetypes (variations on a theme) rather than endless new books we have no need for. And the Advanced Race Guide (ARG) follows in this tradition rather nicely.

Here we get the standard high quality sourcebook with awesome (if often recycled) art. Races get the in-depth treatment this time, with numerous alternate racial traits, Feats, spells and whatnot. New races are explored and the classic races expanded on. This book is a welcome addition to an already stellar game.

Highly recommended.

Paizo Publishing's Advanced Race Guide is the go-to guide for your character's race-options. It breaks down the available fantasy-setting races by common, featured, and uncommon races. Lots of available options for PC races in here, from racial class archetypes (my favorite part I think), racial feats, themed gear/magical items for races, and spells for those races. And of course, racial traits that you can pick from (but you lose a more common racial trait in the swap).

This is quite possibly the BEST hardcover rules supplement that Paizo has done thus far.

I'd give it more stars if I could.

If you want the long and short of it: I have always hated Dwarves in RPGs. This book makes me want to play a Dwarf, for the first time in 20 years of playing D&D.

This book is a wealth of information. From the player perspective, it allows heaps of new options. It doesn't just flesh out the PHB races, though it does that a great deal. It also fleshes out what it calls "Featured Races," which before were just Bestiary entries with a little stat box in them. And by "fleshing out," I mean that it not only gives a little blurb overall, but describes their appearance, their society, their relationships with other races, their motivations, and more. I love fluff like this- it makes playing these races more appealing. Dwarves are no longer a bunch of short, angry drunkards with an inexplicable Scottish accent, they're now more well-rounded and interesting.

On top of that, it introduces players to "Uncommon Races," which are races from a variety of sources, including adventure paths and the Dragon Empires campaign setting.

Every race in the book gets more Racial Trait and Favored Class options. In the case of Core Races, it includes but adds to those given in the Advanced Player's Guide- each Core Race now has a Favored Class option for every class (to date). In addition, they introduce new feats, spells, and magic items restricted to or thematically relevant to each race in the book.

This is great, as it encourages both players that reinforce racial stereotypes AND those players who would defy the stereotypes and experiment with new roles. A half-orc can get something interesting and rewarding, whether it's a Barbarian or a Wizard or a Paladin.

5 Stars. It gives you dozens of alternate races to use, both for PC's and NPCs. it also gives a lot of stuff on the 'standard' races for Pathfinder. (( Humans, Gnomes, Dwarves, Halfings, Half orcs, Half Elves. etc)) That give alternate paths you can go with them. Mountain dwarves or forest elves, etc, with different traits and specialties. These details are very nice to have and can really flesh out YOUR Dwarf from all the other dwarves or YOUR Half Orc from others.

Naturally the majority of the book is on lesser played but still fun races. Some will be used mostly for bad guys, some for those people who are 'tired of the norm'.

The illustrations are beautiful and the book is great. Can't recommend it enough.
