3.0 out of 5 stars Pathki Nana: Kootenai Girl Solves a Mystery, April 1, 2000

This review is from: Pathki Nana: Kootenai Girl Solves A Mystery (Paperback)
An avid historical fiction reader, I was hooked on author Kenneth Thomasma's books from the first one I read. Pathki Nana was the fifth one I read. The story seemed well-researched and accurate, with characters that were believeable. Pathki Nana is the story of a nine year old Kootenai girl who is always unhappy. She does not relate to other people well, and remains a loner much of the time. The only person who understands Pathki is her grandmother. Pathki tries to improve her life by helping her family, but her efforts to help her little brother learn to use a bow and arrow result in disaster. Humiliated and ashamed, Pathki has no place to go. Her grandmother suggests seeking a a guardian spirit, who will hopefully bring Pathki happiness and a better life. Pathki chooses to seek her guardian spirit in the nearby mountains and leaves her village for a nearby mountain. Her plans change after she witnesses a man from her village named Cut Ears betray her tribe by selling one of their horses to an enemy. Cut Ears sees her witness his betrayal. He follows her with the intent to kill her, and Pathki is forced to run for her life. Pathki spends the next two months in the wilderness, hiding from Cut Ears and trying to survive. How she gets back to her village to tell her people of Cut Ears' betrayal, how she learns to survive on her own, and how she finds a guardian spirit in the most unexpected of places with an unexpected surprise makes an interesing and thought-provoking adventure story. While not my favorite book in Thomasma's Amazing Indian Children series, Pathki Nana was an interesting and informative read. I would recommend it to anyone interested in native ameriocan culture, and a girl's journey to find out who she is.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'must read' book, April 9, 2000

You must read Pathki Nana by Kenneth Thomasma. Pathki Nana is full of powerful feelings and emotions. The Kootenai girl unravels a mystery of her tribe and flees for her life with an oozing infected knee and a wild man close on her tail! To find out how she survives, read the book. If I tell anymore, I'm afraid I would give away the end. -Grace Borchers - Age 9

4.0 out of 5 stars Pathki Nana, April 2, 2000

I thought Pathki Nana was an awesome book! I thought it was clever and I really like how much Kenneth Thomasma researches before he writes. Pathki Nana was an 8-year-old girl who saw something that would change her life forever. It talks about her difficulties in trying to get back to her tribe while being pursued by and evil man named Cut-Ears. I would advise everybody to read it!
