5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I think this book is excellent not only for student but also for any veterinary pathologists. It is well writen and it has a lot of excellent figures (remember that Prof McGavin has published "Specimen Dissection and Photography: For the Pathologist, Anatomist and Biologist"). This is the successor to Thompson's Special Veterinary Pathology. The authors basically took portions of the first half of Robbins' Pathologic Basis of Disease, added veterinary examples, and tacked Thompson's on the end to make a veterinary-specific book. However, Robbins is better for general pathology, and Jubb, Kennedy, and Palmer are better for systemic pathology...

I think this book is excellent not only for student but also for any veterinary pathologists. It is well writen and it has a lot of excellent figures (remember that Prof McGavin has published "Specimen Dissection and Photography: For the Pathologist, Anatomist and Biologist"). In fact, is the veterinary version of the famous Robbin's human pathology book, but with more and much better gross and histologic photos. A drawback is that only animal diseases of North America are included and for this reason the Bible still is Jubb&Kennedy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Pathology Book, September 30, 2008

This book has almost, if not everything you would like to know concerning veterinary pathology. It is huge and a bit bulky and it kind of sucks if you have to carry it with you for every class session, but it definitely holds a lot of interesting information.

For learning veterinary pathology, this book is incredible.

This book has beautiful figures and the text is written in a way that TEACHES you, in the first part, the basics of pathology, and in the second part, specific organ systems. What I really like about this book is that they try to keep the text interesting to keep you reading. Pathology can seem very random at times, but the way they put this book together ties the pathogenesis to the specific diseases in a way that it "makes sense" why these diseases occur in the first place. In other words, they were very careful to write the text to explain to HOW the disease occurs BEFORE they start drilling you with terminology and rote memorization. Also, each systems chapter has a nice introduction on the normal physiology so that you can refresh yourself and refer back to those sections instead of digging out your physiology book again.

I think that this book can legitimately be called the "Big Robbins" of veterinary medicine.

Some cons:

- it is large and heavy.
- it would be virtually impossible to read every chapter of this book during the semester because there is so much information to read

This book is an incredible reference for veterinary students. It has helped me in 7 different classes so far! The photographs are incredibly helpful, and the book is well organized by body system. I found this for $94 by a separate seller listed on Amazon.com and saved $40. I do not regret the purchase of this book whatsoever! I'll have it for the rest of my career.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not really an improvement, November 15, 2010
This review is from: Pathologic Basis of Veterinary Disease, 4e (Hardcover)
This is the successor to Thompson's Special Veterinary Pathology. The authors basically took portions of the first half of Robbins' Pathologic Basis of Disease, added veterinary examples, and tacked Thompson's on the end to make a veterinary-specific book. However, Robbins is better for general pathology, and Jubb, Kennedy, and Palmer are better for systemic pathology.

I found the writing style in the first half (general pathology) to be difficult to read, and for boards, I used Robbins as my primary source, referring back to McGavin when needed for things that are different.

If you're studying veterinary pathology, you need this book (and Robbins, and probably access to JKP) for boards. That doesn't make it a good book. However, I will say the photos in this book are excellent.

The book showed up promptly and is exactly what I needed. It is a fairly interesting read as textbooks go, but it is a useful reference for veterinary students.

I received my packaged promptly (before the shipping date estimate) with the package being delivered in perfect condition like I would buy from a bookshop. I am happy to continue doing business on here while undergoing my univeristy studies.
