PreTest is the closest you can get to seeing the USMLE Step 1 before you take it!

500 USMLE-type questions and answers!

"This book is a wonderful resource for second year medical students taking pathology as well as medical students in their clinical years. It is a good review and highly relevant to what I am seeing in the hospital." -- Sheree Perron, Third Year Medical Student, Eastern Virginia Medical School

"I especially liked how there was a wide range of difficulty with questions. The pictures that accompanied several of the questions were very clear, and represented what students are likely to see on the actual exam." -- Jodie Bachman, Third Year Medical Student, UMDNJ School of Osteopathic Medicine

Great for course review and the USMLE Step 1, Pathology: PreTest asks the right questions so you’ll know the right answers. You’ll find 500 clinical-vignette style questions and answers along with complete explanations of correct and incorrect answers. The content has been reviewed by students who recently passed their exams, so you know you are studying the most relevant and up-to-date material possible. No other study guide targets what you really need to know in order to pass like PreTest!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent addition to coursework, January 4, 2012

This review is from: Pathology: PreTest Self-Assessment and Review, Thirteenth Edition (PreTest Basic Science) (Paperback)
Perhaps it would be better to relate this book as a PreTest book for the foundations of pathology. Just as the previous reviewer noted, it is broken up by system and does not have a set of questions dedicated to those symptoms that can cross multiple organ systems.

That being said, if your program uses Robbins and is systems-based, then this book is an excellent addition to your study materials. For a typical medical pathology course, I would first recommend Robbin's Review of Pathology, then this book. I also favor question style review of material, so I'm biased towards these types of books instead of Goljan and other summary-style books.

If you're prepping for a major exam like Step 1 or the pathology Shelf Exam, this book can be useful, but an online q-bank would be your best bet.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not challenging enough, January 12, 2011

This review is from: Pathology: PreTest Self-Assessment and Review, Thirteenth Edition (PreTest Basic Science) (Paperback)
The questions presented in this edition of Path PreTest are NOT challenging enough.

1. There are too many first-order questions that simply test your memorization skills and not enough critical thinking questions.
2. Secondly, the questions asked on the exams at my medical school were not in isolation: meaning that I had to determine if I was being asked a pulmonary question versus a renal question, since both systems contribute to regulating blood pH. However, the questions on PreTest were strictly divided by topic, making it difficult to ask cross-referencing questions.

The text is good if you need to review your FOUNDATION of pathology, but there are other, more challenging Q banks out there for Path.

Good luck!

2.0 out of 5 stars good questions, bad explanations, February 13, 2012

This book is all right, but nothing spectacular, and even can be frustrating to work with. The reason is that the answers are not well taylored to explain questions, they dont teach (they are often simply text), they are not to the point; all things we need to be efficient studying. The questions themselves I tink are ok for the most part.
