4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent addition to coursework
Perhaps it would be better to relate this book as a PreTest book for the foundations of pathology. Just as the previous reviewer noted, it is broken up by system and does not have a set of questions dedicated to those symptoms that can cross multiple organ systems.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not challenging enough
The questions presented in this edition of Path PreTest are NOT challenging enough.

1. There are too many first-order questions that simply test your memorization skills and not enough critical thinking questions.

This review is from: Pathology: PreTest Self-Assessment and Review, Thirteenth Edition (PreTest Basic Science) (Paperback)
The questions presented in this edition of Path PreTest are NOT challenging enough.

1. There are too many first-order questions that simply test your memorization skills and not enough critical thinking questions.
2. Secondly, the questions asked on the exams at my medical school were not in isolation: meaning that I had to determine if I was being asked a pulmonary question versus a renal question, since both systems contribute to regulating blood pH. However, the questions on PreTest were strictly divided by topic, making it difficult to ask cross-referencing questions.

The text is good if you need to review your FOUNDATION of pathology, but there are other, more challenging Q banks out there for Path.

Good luck!

Perhaps it would be better to relate this book as a PreTest book for the foundations of pathology. Just as the previous reviewer noted, it is broken up by system and does not have a set of questions dedicated to those symptoms that can cross multiple organ systems.

That being said, if your program uses Robbins and is systems-based, then this book is an excellent addition to your study materials. For a typical medical pathology course, I would first recommend Robbin's Review of Pathology, then this book. I also favor question style review of material, so I'm biased towards these types of books instead of Goljan and other summary-style books.

If you're prepping for a major exam like Step 1 or the pathology Shelf Exam, this book can be useful, but an online q-bank would be your best bet.
