Book Description

This book has been described as the bible of muscle disease, from both a scientific and a clinical point of view. It is a comprehensive work that explains and illustrates in detail all pathological reactions of skeletal muscles that occur in human disease. The microscopic changes are illustrated by histochemistry, immunocytochemistry, resin histology, and electron microscopy. The pathological findings are correlated with the clinical picture whenever possible. The interpretation of the findings is scientifically based. To facilitate this process, the fundamentals of normal histology and biology of the muscle cell are also covered.
The book has been thoroughly revised and expanded for this Second Edition to provide up-to-date coverage of the relevant molecular biology and molecular genetics, as well as extensive references. It has been well organized and richly illustrated by the authors, who have been at the forefront of muscle pathology and neuromuscular research for 35 years. This practical reference work is intended for neuropathologists, neurologists, and general pathologists who look at muscle biopsies. It will also serve as an introduction to muscle disease for neurology and pathology residents.

Review

Praise for the First Edition:

"Muscle biopsy is an art, and to be done well requires a specialized laboratory with histochemical capabilities, an interest in the subject, and training and experience in the field. The authors have met those requirements and have produced a book on muscle biopsy pathology that will be the standard reference work in this area for many years ... The color illustrations of muscle histochemical reactions prove once again that a muscle biopsy can be a thing of beauty. These color plates are the best available ... "--Annals of Internal Medicine

"Here is a coherent, authoritative, and extensively illustrated reference work on human skeletal muscle pathology ...The greatest strengths of this book are the correlative approach of the authors and the high quality of the illustrations. It should be an important reference work for physicians, particularly neurologists, pathologists, specialists in rehabilitation medicine, and others involved in the care of patients with neuromuscular diseases."--The New England Journal of Medicine

"This is a large, beautifully illustrated labor of love extensively covering, with black and white photographs and a few in color, the subject given in its title ...The volume will become a standard in any substantial library."--Annals of Neurology

"In my opinion, this is the best and most complete book available on skeletal muscle pathology today and I believe that it will quickly become the standard teaching and reference text on this subject."--The Canadian Journal of Neurological Sciences

"... the textbook they have written must be one of the best ever produced on muscle pathology ... the working myologist will want to have it at hand rather than be dependent on a library copy."--Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry

"The book provides a unified and consistent clinicopathological viewpoint in each section...the book should be of interest to all physicians, scientists, and students who wish to obtain an appreciation of muscular disease at the cellular and subcellular level."--J.Neurosurg Volume 97, August 2002

You will find the methodology of biopsy, processing, and stains at the beginning, following this introduction, as Chapter 2, partly symbolically to remind us that what we know derives considerably from what we can see, and partly so as not to interrupt the flow of descriptive text. Read the first page
