This new edition, now in full colour, is the leading textbook of pathophysiology on the market. It provides detailed explanations of the basic concepts of pathophysiology: cellular structure, communication, injury, and repair. It also includes the latest research on influence of environment and genetics on disease processes. The body systems organization of the chapters makes all information easily accessible. Each unit begins with an overview of normal anatomy and physiology. Plus, the consistent presentation of specific diseases covers etiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and treatment. The lifespan coverage highlights aging factors in the development of disease with special headings and provides in-depth pediatric content in separate chapters. These features, plus hundreds of full-colour photographs and illustrations, are invaluable for learning to identify disease manifestations. This text provides students the complete knowledge base necessary for learning pathophysiology. Features: * Basic pathophysiologic concepts presented in Part One to provide a solid foundation for specific disease processes in Part Two. * Consistent chapter organization within each of the body systems units: 1. Overview of normal anatomy and physiology of the specific body system, 2. Alterations of function in adults, 3. Alterations of function in children. * Detailed chapter outlines with page numbers begin each chapter for easy access to content. * Key terms boldfaced in text and listed with corresponding page numbers at end of each chapter. * Chapter summaries provide thorough review of main concepts presented. * Hundreds of tables compare and contrast data to improve comprehension. * Lifespan coverage includes normal and abnormal variations in children and older adults: separate chapters for the pediatric content and special headings for aging content within adult chapters. * Consistent presentation of each specific disease includes epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and evaluation and treatment. * Full-colour artwork enhances learning of normal anatomy, physiology, and disease processes. NEW FEATURES: * Full-colour design makes the content more visually appealing and invites students into the text. * New full-colour illustrations throughout, including hundreds of photomicrographs and dozens of original drawings, simplify complex disease processes. * "What's New" boxes highlight the latest research and findings. * Extensive update and revision of content on genes and genetic diseases. * Most current data available on cancer statistics, including children, ensures up-to-date coverage. * New unit on "Multiple Interacting Systems" explains the involvement of multiple body systems in shock, multiple organ dysfunction, and burns. * New chapter on "Neurobiology of Schizophrenia, Mood and Anxiety Disorders" explains the connection between biology and mental illness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, September 7, 1998

This review is from: Pathophysiology: The Biologic Basis for Disease in Adults and Children (Hardcover)
This is an excellent textbook for advanced practice nurses. I have used the 2nd edition previously, and I find the 3rd edition to be vastly improved. I particularly like the new emphasis in every chapter on the differences in pediatric and geriatric physiology. This text is very useful when teaching nurse practitioner students, as it describes the correlation between normal and abnormal pathophysiologic processes in disease. I would highly recommend using this text along with the Instructor's Resource Book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Content, January 4, 2000

This review is from: Pathophysiology: The Biologic Basis for Disease in Adults and Children (Hardcover)
I had a professor who used the second edition of this text in my undergrad nursing patho class -- it was excellent and I still refer to it often today. Along with the pathophysiology, each section is prefaced with a review of normal anatomy/physiology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Pathophysiology Book on the marker, September 4, 1998
This review is from: Pathophysiology: The Biologic Basis for Disease in Adults and Children (Hardcover)
I use this book as a supplement to the various specific EMS textbooks for my paramedic students. McCance, etal, always has a clear pathway from the patient to the pathophysiology. Students can trace the steps involved at a reasonable level of detail, rather than pointless minutia.

Not a single sentence is wasted. Read every word!
