This is an excellent textbook for advanced practice nurses. I have used the 2nd edition previously, and I find the 3rd edition to be vastly improved. This is an excellent textbook for advanced practice nurses. I have used the 2nd edition previously, and I find the 3rd edition to be vastly improved. I particularly like the new emphasis in every chapter on the differences in pediatric and geriatric physiology. This text is very useful when teaching nurse practitioner students, as it describes the correlation between normal and abnormal pathophysiologic processes in disease. I would highly recommend using this text along with the Instructor's Resource Book.

I had a professor who used the second edition of this text in my undergrad nursing patho class -- it was excellent and I still refer to it often today. Along with the pathophysiology, each section is prefaced with a review of normal anatomy/physiology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Pathophysiology Book on the marker, September 4, 1998
This review is from: Pathophysiology: The Biologic Basis for Disease in Adults and Children (Hardcover)
I use this book as a supplement to the various specific EMS textbooks for my paramedic students. McCance, etal, always has a clear pathway from the patient to the pathophysiology. Students can trace the steps involved at a reasonable level of detail, rather than pointless minutia.

Not a single sentence is wasted. Read every word!

There really is no reason anyone should buy this book. Clearly the Robbins book is the leader in the field of clinical pathophys. Medical and other students with more than a passing interest should head immediately toward that text. If Robbins is to expensive/intimidating, there must be a more concise and better organized book than this one.

Also, this book is just too damn big. It's unnecessary.

If you're a medical student, DON'T BUY THIS BOOK !!

I was so unlucky to get this book recommended for my pathophysiology studies, but clearly this book is for nurses or the average taxi-driver who want an easy introduction to the topic. There are a few lines about everything, so you won't understand anything and won't remember anything. This despite it's the bulkiest book I have! I can't even have it in my bookshelf, so now I use it as a stand for my bedroom alarm clock!

Going from studying a good physiology book to reading pathophysiology like this is a waste of time. Pathophysiology can't be explained by a few lines of text and reviewing clinical symptoms! For medical students used to study things in-depth this book would be a step back.

If I could sell it I would, but the shipping costs would double the prize of the book, and I would have to lie better then a Kirby-salesman to convince the buyer.

My advice: Stay away from this one. (Even if you're a nurse student.)

3.0 out of 5 stars Needs more organization, April 20, 2000

I personally took the course just a few months back, and felt that it needs to be organized better. It was very informative, but really confusing when trying to seperate different areas of focus. The section on hypersensitivity reactions, for example, needs better structure.

1.0 out of 5 stars This is too much!!, September 27, 2011
This review is from: Pathophysiology: The Biologic Basis for Disease in Adults and Children (Hardcover)
When I got this book for my Family Nurse Practitioner Patho course, it looked amazing.
This book is one of the most poorly written textbooks I have even owned. It jumps around
and the simple is made more complex than it needs to be. After reading it for my course,
I find myself using the internet to find the actual meat of the subject. You have to
sort thru pages of very technical CRAP that you don't need or want to know to find the
information that is necessary for practical application. It does not seem that the writers
had an in depth understanding of the subject matter to allow them to synthesize and develop
a course of study. It is just a mismash of information, gathered and thrown together in
a very thick 2000 page book that you will never use again in this lifetime for any
practical purpose. I absolutely HATE this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but you must sometimes dig a little deeper : ], December 2, 2000
This review is from: Pathophysiology: The Biologic Basis for Disease in Adults and Children (Hardcover)
I purchased this patho book when in nursing school and have found it an excellent reference; more so now in the work field. There are occassions I've actually taken it to work to share info with co-workers. Everyone has been very receptive to it's clarity. However, sometimes you must use many different search key words in the index to find what you may particularly be interested in. The book itself is very well constructed including good quality paper and illustrations.
