Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Clare's absorbing 11th entry in her Hawkenlye series (The Enchanter's Forest, etc.) highlights the many perils of life in medieval England. One cold November day in 1196, an exhausted stranger arrives at the estate of Sir Josse d'Acquin, a loyal soldier of the king bored with inactivity. Josse gives the man shelter in an outbuilding, suspecting him to be the servant of a crusader recently returned from the Holy Land. After a fortnight, the stranger abruptly vanishes, then a body, brutalized beyond recognition, turns up in the nearby woods. Meanwhile, a prisoner exchange gone wrong has led to a hunt across Europe for a runaway monk carrying unknown treasure. Josse relies on Abbess Helewise of Hawkenlye Abbey for counsel and solace, while the local sheriff, Gervase de Gifford, helps Josse track down a secret with the potential to change warfare forever. A lurid subplot set in the Holy Land adds to the suspense. (Aug.)

From Booklist

England, 1196. Sir Josse d’Acquin is bored with managing his estate and longs to get back to his first love, soldiering. Failing that, he’d be content with returning to his beloved Hawkenlye Abbey, where he can find peace, good conversation, and a warm drink. But his boredom turns to interest when a stranger dressed in travel-stained robes appears at his door. Josse assumes the mysterious, dark-skinned man is a servant of one of the Crusaders recently returned from Outremer. The man stays a few days in Josse’s outbuilding, then mysteriously disappears. At first offended, then puzzled, Josse determines to learn the fate of the secretive stranger. When a local merchant discovers the brutalized body of a man beneath a tree in the nearby forest, Josse discovers a connection between the dead man and the stranger. His attempt to unravel the baffling mystery soon leads him into a tangled web of blackmail and murder. Clare is a gifted storyteller whose vibrant characters, unusual plot, and vivid descriptions of life in twelfth-century England make for a period mystery with immense appeal. --Emily Melton --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Warrior knights, May 9, 2008

It was very good. There was enough of the running series plot and undertones to keep my interest as well as many new things as always. I would recommend reading the rest of the series first but I am a linear person. The new characters kept me in suspense with the information that they withheld from the main characters and just the intrigue. I was totally surprised when I found out how it was going to end and that was right up in the last few lines. Alys Clare should be congratulated for her historical knowledge (this is historical fiction) and her imagination. Her license with the period was spellbinding. If you are a fan of the series you will be well pleased. If you are newbie prepare to be caught up with the characters. I can't wait for the next book. Too bad it will be the last book in the series. I intend to see what the author will present after that. Good job Alys Clare.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another captivating Hawkenlye episode, October 14, 2010

"Paths of the Air" was another great addition to Alys Clare's series about Hawkenlye. Each book is well written and that makes me eager to read the next. The main characters are so well-drawn that I think I'd recognize them if I saw them on the street. There's a moral strength in the story that I appreciate: the "good" characters behave well; the "badies" don't. In spite of that, the characters are three-dimensional, behaving realistically. The plots are interesting, especially in the details of history, living quarters, clothing, and class status.

Most of my reading material I get from the library, but after purchasing the first Hawkenlye book, I was hooked and have bought the succeeding novels. They are captivating, and with all that historical detail they deserve a second (and third?) reading.
