If you have a chance to get a copy of this book, do so. It is a powerful read about the history of archaeology. It tracks the great explorers and philologists (scholars of languages) who made the great discoveries and translated the ancient writings from around the world.
Reading just a few pages filled me with so much vital information about the great men and great discoveries that the few dollars I paid for my used copy in a bookstore will never be regretted.
[And to think that I almost did not buy it!]
It was the chapter on the Deciphering of ancient languages that first caught my attention. Those lovely illustrations of the Cuneiform Script from Sumeria just could not be passed over. The information on their Deciphering captivated me so that I felt like a giddy little schoolboy.
I do not know archaeologists by name, so Tom B. Jones is unknown to me, but reading his account of the "Application of the Historical Method to Ancient History" has filled me with renewed wonder.
