5.0 out of 5 stars Impossible to start your career without this book!
This book is an absolute *MUST READ* for women (and men!) interested in becoming any type of midwife. This book is chalk full of the perfect information from beginning to end. It begins with general information on how to get started with educating yourself, from schooling and self-motivation, to a couple of very inspiring birth stories! There are request forms, and...

3.0 out of 5 stars Know where you're going
If you are not sure what path you want to take, this book is for you. If you do know what kind of midwife you want to be, this book will show you other perspectives. Has good information about political issues and a good history of all types of midwifery.

This book is an absolute *MUST READ* for women (and men!) interested in becoming any type of midwife. This book is chalk full of the perfect information from beginning to end. It begins with general information on how to get started with educating yourself, from schooling and self-motivation, to a couple of very inspiring birth stories! There are request forms, and there are directories for school and programs galore. Your library is lacking without this *schoolbook*. I highly recommend this book! I couldn't have done without, and trust me, you really can't either! =)

This is an excellent resource for those considering becoming midwives. It raises important questions in the reader. While it has a definite "midwifery is the coolest thing in the world" vibe, it doesn't completely neglect the negative aspects of midwifery. Several of the articles describe the sacrifices a midwife has to make to perform her duty adequately, and several describe the heartbreak of having one's advice not followed to the possible detriment of mother and child. I would say this is a must read for anyone who is curious about becoming a midwife.

Wonderful tool for those trying to decide a. to become a midwife and b. what type of midwife to become! Lots of great information that is sometimes both confusing and hard to find with on-line resources. Very highly recommended for anyone interested in becoming any kind of midwife!

1.0 out of 5 stars Lacked dignity and discretion for the public view, October 17, 2008
This review is from: Paths to Becoming a Midwife : Getting an Education (Paperback)
I am a mother of seven children. I have delivered all seven naturally, so I am writing from the standpoint of having been there. I purchased this book for my 18 year old daughter who has shown an interest in midwifery. It came today. I was disappointed at many of the pictures as I began to flip through the book. It is one thing to be in a real life situation; quite another to take a snap shot for the public to view. The pictures that were objectionable to me had nothing to demonstrate that was being written. They were absolutely unnecessary.

Childbirth is a wonderful miracle of our creator, and shows His glory. I think midwifery has a place especially as more and more young women are being propelled through an unnatural birth experience these days, but let's not lose our dignity or discretion. I am sending this book back.
