5.0 out of 5 stars Melting...A Classic
This wonderful book used to be one of the few positive lesbian books out there. I know when I found it, years ago, I was comforted by the portrayal of two women making their way in a world that does not want them to be together. They lack even the words to describe their feelings for each other. When one describes her physical reaction to the other's lovemaking as...

3.0 out of 5 stars An against all odds love story.
I did not like the writing format of the book. It was set to far back in the 19th century.Superb job in displaying the shape of each character and their personality. An against all odds love story. A mediocre ride though as far as the storyline.A regular read. Characters were OK but they may not be able to stand on their own. Storyline was So,So. A straight line with no...

5.0 out of 5 stars Melting...A Classic, November 25, 2001
This wonderful book used to be one of the few positive lesbian books out there. I know when I found it, years ago, I was comforted by the portrayal of two women making their way in a world that does not want them to be together. They lack even the words to describe their feelings for each other. When one describes her physical reaction to the other's lovemaking as "melting" I thought that was a perfect description for the book. It made all my cynicism melt away for a while.

It's a period piece and a well-written romantic tale that no true romantic will want to miss.

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential text for any enlighted woman., July 19, 1998
By A Customer
PATIENCE AND SARAH was an unexpected suprise to me. As an avid reader, it is books like this that continue to fuel the flames of my reading passion. I found this novel absolutely delightful as a romance story, and unquestionably important as a women's history text. This is an important book for all who consider themselves concerned citizens. The story centers around a lesbian love story but translates its message of sexual awakening, search for identity, and tolerance into a profound reminder of the difficulties surrounding all marginalized groups. I place this novel alongside Simone de Beauvoir's THE SECOND SEX as esential reading that inspires me and has changed the face of women's history forever. the face of society for all women.

5.0 out of 5 stars A warm, fuzzy, lovely book., December 26, 1998
By A Customer
I picked up this book out of curiosity and because of the "sensational" subject, and was totally captivated by the personalities of the two heroines, the warmth and passion of their relationship, their quest for "a place for us," and the lyrical writing. The plot is a bit too good to be true, but who cares? It's a book to love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved - Loved - Loved it !!!, November 18, 2005
This is a terrific novel that should not be missed. This is a timeless classic so well written you would think the author made a career in writing historic literature.

You actually feel the deep emotion that they have for each other. It's so strong that you sometimes forget the humor that is laced throughout. There are some powerful scenes that reflect the harsh times where women did not have a say in their own affairs.

There is as much depth in one chapter as you will get in entire novels. The writing simply flows and you don't put the book down until you notice the day has gone dark and lunch and dinner time have passed you by. Wonderful characters so rich in details that you wonder about them long after the novel ends.

I couldn't be happier by the authors other books - if you enjoyed Patience and Sarah you will be delighted with Side by Side.

You will not find a better novel to read

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book for the beach or backyard, June 19, 2000
Although this book is no grand litery work I really enjoyed it. I was searching for a quick read that would be enjoyable and require little effort on my part, this book was perfect. The story is charming and it is easy to get caught up in the story. It is nice warm fuzzy of a book.

Perfect for the airplane, beach or in front of the fire with some hot chocolate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Warm and Humorous, March 19, 2003

Miller's writing ability is to be highly commended. She manages to combine warmth, love and humor into each page. Having read one too many "small blond" books, it's refreshing to find a lesbian love story in which the writing technique does not become irritating after the first chapter.

Also, this book contains no elderly, non-judgemental housekeepers. The women have to figure things out all by themselves.

Best line in the book: "I'm not playing you, Darling, I'm landing you."

4.0 out of 5 stars You could feel the passion, February 28, 2005
A touching story of two women who fall in love and defy their families and society to be together. Nothing vulgar or obscene. The author did a wonderful job of portraying the genuine love these two women felt for eachother despite very different upbringings. A quick and enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars a story about authentic love and committment, September 27, 2004
A lovely story of finding genuine love, and finding this personal awareness and passion, long before society was willing accept same-gender lovers. Always believable, highly literate, this novel will inspire you to seek out and build a love such as Patience and Saran had for yourself. In this current time where many attactions appear to evaporate in the morning sun, partners will want to read this together. Patience and Sarah will inspire you and your love to build an enduring bond.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read!, July 29, 2001
By A Customer
This is one of the best books I have ever read! It will transport you back through the years. You will become part of the story. I first read this book years ago and I still find myself returning to it again and again. It never grows old. It is such a sincere, honest, although at times, difficult story of life and all it's struggles and triumphs. Don't miss it!

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love It!, February 18, 1998
By A Customer
This book was lent to me by my first girlfriend, in college, and from the first word to the last, it is definitely one of the best books that i have ever read. It has everything-- humour, romance, sincerity, strength, and even though it was to have taken place a long time ago, it is very real and very true, even today...definitely worth it!
