Book Description

April 15, 1995
Description Patinas for Silicon Bronze is a concise compilation of patinas designed for use on this metal alloy as well as many other similar bronze composites used in the casting and/or fabrication of fine art sculpture. Since silicon bronze has become the most common metal used today in the casting of fine art sculpture, this award winning book has become The Bible of artistic patinas for professional artists, art students, museum and independent conservators, and foundry personnel nationally as well as internationally. This book is a reflection of Patrick Kipper s extensive knowledge of the patina process with over 35 years experience, choosing 72 of his more popular individual patina recipes and step by step instructions, along with corresponding color plates. Photographs of finished bronze sculptures are also shown, to give the reader a visual idea of how some of these patinas appear on three dimensional metal surfaces. All of these recipes are for professional hot applications only, but a few examples of cold patina recipes are noted in order to give the reader a well rounded exposure to both schools of patination. The history of patination is discussed as well as a comparison of bronze alloys, metal surface preparation and extensive traditional and contemporary application techniques. Patina on a monumental scale and many problems associated with bronze exposed to the elements is also described in detail. All chemical compounds used in each patina recipe are described in detail along with a chapter devoted exclusively to their possible hazards and emergency first aid. A glossary of terms used in this very secretive art form known as patination is also listed in detail.

About the Author

Patrick Kipper s artistic reputation with art foundries, sculptors, galleries and museums in the art of bronze patination and fine art conservation is internationally known and respected. Beginning his artistic carrier after a short stint in teaching philosophy on the university level, Patrick began working in the art of patination at an art foundry in Loveland, Colorado, where he developed many patina concepts and artistic techniques that are now used around the world today. Moving up in the ranks at an art foundry and learning all aspects of the fine art casting process, Mr. Kipper left the confines of an art foundry to begin his own carrier concentrating on bronze sculpture patination and fine art conservation. As a result of over 35 years of experience in this unique fine art of bronze coloration, Mr. Kipper s immense interest in this art form has taken him not only from coast to coast, but has allowed him to travel to many other parts of the world where he has been most fortunate to work with and learn from master patineurs of the classical and contemporary styles. Patrick presently lectures and demonstrates the art of patinas both nationally as well as internationally, at major institutes of art in the academic as well as private sectors. He also maintains his patina and conservation studio in Loveland, Colorado, where on occasion, he still gives workshops that, in the past have drawn people from all over the world.

This review is from: Patinas for Silicon Bronze (Hardcover)
Although I've never taken any of Kipper's workshops, I know many people who have. They all tell me that he's a patina guru. I've been doing patinas for only a few years, and am by no means an expert, but I use this book like a bible. Kipper's language is clear and concise, and his recipies are understandable. You may not get the result you want on the first try, but you do have something to work from. There's some great color plates that show you examples of the recipies. I find this book invaluable and I consult it almost every day. If you are delving into the world of bronze patina you definately need this book.

Excellent book for the professional or one just learning about patinas. Not only does it give explanation of what materials to use and how, it illustrates the result.
