Perhaps the most over-the-top example of the Chronicle Books style is a small, square volume called Patio Daddy-O: '50s Recipes with '90s twist, written by Gideon Bosker, Karen Brooks, and Leland and Crystal Payton. The book pokes fun at the myth of an idyllic suburban America of the 1950s, and the recipes sound suitably scary. "Slab-O-Fun Barbecues Meat Loaf." "Uncle Bob's Peanut Butter Sandwiches with Texas Sweets." "Dragonbreath Corn on the Cob." The fun begins, no doubt, with an "Atomic Cocktail."
You may wonder what you'd get if you actually followed many of these recipes, but despite all their silliness, they are very clearly presented. All the ingredients are grouped together on one convenient list and the procedures are broken into short, easy-to-skim numbered steps.

Slab o' Fun!,

This review is from: Patio Daddy-O: '50S Recipes With a Modern Twist (Hardcover)
My new favourite cookbook, and I haven't even tried out the recipes yet! Everything about this book seems so fresh even though the graphics are items that are over 50 years old. The copy is vividly written, just reading the recipes makes you want to throw on an apron and get grillin! The titles of recipes are fabulous, such as "Slab o' Fun Barbequed Meat Loaf" and "Cheesy-Drippin, Garlic Fumin' St. Louis Salad" and the recipes are equally creative. I love how they take classics and give them a twist! There is not a single recipe in this book that I expect to find in any other cookbook. Even if the recipes didn't look delicious and interesting I would still want this book. It's a wonderful reference for the 50's kitsch collecter...all kinds of bbq items and pictures illustrate each page, all appropriately chosen. The graphics add so much! This is a gem of a book! I can't wait to display this wonderful conversation peice on my chrome bakers rack in my retro kitchen and have my friends over for a classic patio party!

Takes me back to a fattening childhood.,

In the wake of the lounge/martini craze, I was suspect on spotting this book, but after giving the recipes a quick scan, I snatched it up and ran home. These recipes take some of the basic food staples of mainstreet America (and particularly the South), and give them a (usually spicy) twist. Tasty! Heat 'em up and eat 'em up

For anyone who cooks more outdoors than in throughout the summer months, this book is a MUST. The food's tasty and easy, and this piece of retrobilia is as fun to read as cook from. Yummy!
