5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful, March 5, 2000
This review is from: Patria Añorada (Audio CD)
Blues is considered the cradle for rock and roll and it is often stated that the Cuban Són provided the bedrock for what today is known as Salsa music. In that sense we could say that Mr. Nazario is a throwback to early Són (and its North American contemporary, the blues) writers. Rich in vivid imagery and poetic strokes, Mr. Nazario's writing sets out to create a new reality and/or a new man; at times, one borne out of the other, both draped in the language of [sometimes] tragic idealism. An obvious gift for melody makes for a collection of songs that slowly assert their indelible presence on the memory and yet, leave the listener wanting to come back for another round. Every listen brings to the fore another detail, another small revelation... Inevitably, the songs seep into the mind like the wind rushing through windows that slowly yield open, thus allowing more to come through, until one has seemingly laid bare one's own walls, exposing the fabric of our dreams, this, no doubt in response to the manner that Mr. Nazario so heartbreakingly has given flight to his, for all of us to hear and see...."

5.0 out of 5 stars Sentimiento patrio logrado, joya cocola y tropical..., September 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Patria Añorada (Audio CD)
Mis Favoritas: "Isla", "Si Yo Pudiera", "Doña Anatilde", "Carabela", "Mi Monte" e "Isla De Borinquen".

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely World Class, September 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Patria Añorada (Audio CD)
Since first receiving this collection I have listened to it many, many times and have not tired of it. The work is outstanding and displays a range of style that many better known artists do not possess. It is poetry both musically and lyrically, each of the songs is extremely well crafted and presented. You need not speak the language to hear the passion and the poetry in this music. The players, the compositions, and the artist are all definitely world class. Abrazos Rafa, Bien Hecho

5.0 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC. Period. (It's just a matter of time.), August 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Patria Añorada (Audio CD)
(English version of my review follows)

------------------------------------------

The curious thing is that I discovered this CD quite by accident. I have -and listen to- a lot of music (and not just any music, good music). When I received "Patria Añorada" from a friend who knows I love fine Latin stuff (El Gran Combo, y La Fania, Rey Reyes with Charlie Rodriguez, et al, whom I would follow when I lived in New York, as I am a brother with discriminating taste). Anyway, I was in the middle of making a compilation of old Puerto Rican folk music when I unwittingly taped "Patria Añorada" on that cassette. And because I travel to school 45 minutes every day, each way, it was in the car that I began to listen to the cassette I thought was pure PR trove. Well, I couldn't help but repeat one song, and then the next, and then the next, each time with more pause and appreciation, until I repeated the album over several times, because every time I repeated the songs I fell in love with the soft, genuinely suave manner of the singer and depth of this, apparently his first CD, which I have to say is just really so awesome. Musically, the arrangements, the players (who are smokin) the songs and especially the lyrics are without peer, up there with the Ruben Blades and Willie Colons of the world. (And he only translated one song to English but can obviously write in this language too)

To listen to this CD is to realize the depth and the profound sense of brotherhood that Mr. Nazario carries in his soul. Hats off, folks.

5.0 out of 5 stars The sound bites don't do it justice!, June 30, 1999
By A Customer

You have to hear it for yourself. I'm not a big latin/salsa fan, but this CD made me want to dance! It has a great variety of styles and sounds, and (if you know Spanish) you'll see that Rafael is a great storyteller and poet. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars SOULFUL, November 18, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Patria Añorada (Audio CD)
Like a balmy night in a faraway land, Nazario's voice entered my soul...and became me. Typically, for me, places are like that -- they are become you and you, them. However, Nazario's music has captured this feeling and once it enters you, it will never, ever leave. Of course, you'd never want it to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unforgettable Music, September 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Patria Añorada (Audio CD)
I must admit. I found this CD because a friend told me about it. Now I feel I should tell everyone. Every song is unique and very different, and yet, they all fit together. ?? I can't explain it even to myself but the more I listened, the more I was pulled in by the music. My wife, who speaks perfect Spanish, thinks he, Mssr. Nazario, is one of the best writers/composers she's ever heard on song. She called him a poet but he's a most wonderful melodist. Magnifique! I don't understand why he isn't famous.

5.0 out of 5 stars An album that deserves a wider audience, August 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Patria Añorada (Audio CD)
If this CD had been released by a major label, every lover of Latin music in the world would know the name Rafael Antonio Nazario. As it is, this is the kind of discovery that makes looking in out of the way places worthwhile.

Wonderful from start to finish. What Mr. Nazario lacks in vocal virtuosity he more than makes up for in heart. These songs represent a wide range of Latin styles, and, often, stretch the boundaries of those styles. Listeners who love jazz will find their appreciation of this masterpiece heightened still further.

My highest recommendation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Una maravilla. (Marvelous.), July 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Patria Añorada (Audio CD)
