Book Description

Five Star First Edition Mystery March 2000
Investigating a murder in a family too much like his own, El Paso Homicide Detective Devon Gray walks a tightrope between protecting his kin and upholding the law. When his ex-con brother is implicated in the case, Devon strives to keep silent about his brother's complicity while seeking the truth. Award-winning author Elizabeth Fackler deftly portrays the two families opposed across the field of one detective's love and honor. "Incisive dialogue and neat plotting distinguish this bittersweet thriller." -PW "Fackler's elegant prose is a pleasure to read." -Booklist "A fine writer." -The New York Times

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

As its blunt title suggests, this is a tough book. When El Paso homicide detective Devon Gray is called in to investigate the murder of Theodore Truxal, it quickly becomes apparent that Truxal's family is not heartbroken over his death. In fact, Truxal's phony-cheery wife and perpetually sullen children are reluctant to help with the investigation. When Gray learns that his own troubled, ex-con brother might be involved, he struggles with the dueling roles of cop and brother. How far he is willing to bend the rules is one of the most interesting parts of the story. Although Fackler's elegant prose can be a pleasure to read, her disturbing subject matter--sex with underage girls is a main theme--may get in the way for some readers. Gray is an extremely appealing protagonist, however, and this series deserves support where such edgy crime writers as Andrew Vachss have established an audience. Jenny McLarin

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Brotherly Love, April 23, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Patricide (Five Star First Edition Mystery) (Hardcover)
This is an edgy story about the love between two brothers, one a cop, the other a small-time crook, and how far the good brother will go to help the bad. The women are powerful, the pacing intense, the characters realistic, and the ending satisfying without being pie-in-the-sky. I look forward to a sequel.

I loved it! Tough, real, sweet and caustic, like life. Highly recommended to anyone who wants fiction that deals with reality rather than fantasy.
