Book Description

July 31, 1999
Find Your Patriot Ancestors!

This CD contains over 610,000 family history records of Patriots and their descendants - over 140,000 more than were contained on the 1998 Edition of the Patriot Index. (The first edition of the CD was published in 1998, and contained only 470,000 records.) Records are presented in standard genealogical format, (i.e., as a lineage-linked database), so that descendants, where applicable, can easily be traced back to Patriot Ancestors.

Using Progeny Family Explorer included with the Index, it is easy to search and navigate through records in the database, as well as print family reports and charts for various people on the CD.

An ongoing project of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), data for the Patriot Index is compiled from ancestral cards on file at SAR National Headquarters, primary and supplemental applications from State Archives, and approved membership applications submitted to the SAR between 1880 and 1998.

An extensive online section of the CD also provides information on the SAR and how to become a member.

System Requirements: Windows 3.1, 95, 98 or NT; 486 CPU or better; 8MB free hard drive space; CD ROM drive. No other software is required to use this CD.

Editorial Reviews

Review

I found this to be one of the better Indexes that are available to the Genealogist. What a great way to find those long lost ancestors that we are looking for in the Revolutionary War era.

The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution should be commended for a job well done! -- So King News, May/June 1999

Keep in mind that the title is the "SAR Patriot Index." It is an INDEX to other records. While the information presented on the CD-ROM is valuable by itself, every entry is a pointer to a record in a filing cabinet someplace... I spent some time looking for some of my known ancestors within the database and received a pleasant surprise: one individual that I have listed in my database as "probably the son of..." was indeed listed as the son of the same person on two different applications for membership in the SAR. Apparently the SAR has received documentation of that connection which meets the SAR's stringent requirements. I quickly printed out copy request forms and have now mailed them to SAR headquarters, and I expect to receive photocopies of the members' applications within a couple of months. All in all, I am delighted with this CD-ROM disc. -- Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter, May 25, 1998

From the Publisher

Publishing this kind of data on CD makes a lot more sense than going to print. Instead of printing several volumes of thick reference books, all you need is one CD. Data is so much easier and quicker to find, plus you can print out various reports and charts with the Progeny Family Explorer - the powerful search and report utility included on all Progeny CD-ROM products.

Family Explorer provides the interface to the records stored in the Patriot Index, effectively creating a standalone product. Using Family Explorer, users can quickly search and navigate through records in the database, as well as print professional quality charts and reports for various people on the CD. Now, with this latest version, it is also possible to export records in GEDCOM format for direct import into any popular genealogy database program.

4.0 out of 5 stars A handy resource, but far from as complete as it could be, December 3, 2008
This review is from: 1999 SAR Patriot Index (CD-ROM)
The Patriot Index was conceived by the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) as a means of expanding membership and interest in the organization, as well as making it easier for amateur and professional genealogists alike to determine if they had an ancestor who provided service during the Revolution. Partnering with Progeny was a wise idea and this CD-ROM utilizes and incorporates their Progeny Family Explorer, so there's no need to purchase it separately.

The information provided comes from the Ancestral Cards maintained by the SAR that contained varying amounts of information and go back to the first application for membership. The oldest records will contain only the name of the Patriot Ancestor's name, the name of the applicant, and their National and State Numbers. These pieces of information help in obtaining a copy of the original application from the National Headquarters in Louisville and there is information with the CD-ROM on how to obtain that. More recent applications may contain additional information, but oftentimes there is little on the intervening generations, necessitating a copy of the original application.

Overall the CD-ROM works as well as anything Progeny offers, which is to say it works quite well. It is not, however, MacIntosh compatible, but does work with all Microsoft Operating systems. I haven't tried it on Vista yet, but imagine it should load and run properly. Charts can be run in Ancestor Chart, Fan Chart, Ahnentafel, Descendent Chart, Outline, and Register formats and there is GEDCOM export capability as well as Progeny's excellent customer service and support. This CD-ROM likely has wider appeal than members of the SAR or those interested in joining, which likely accounts for it being rather hard to find. The Edition III released in 2002 represented a further leap forward as far as more detailed information on intervening generations and is the superior of the two editions, but this is perfectly suitable if you cannot find or afford the newer edition.
