THE PATRIOT remains controversial to this day. There has always been much controversy over its historical accuracy and the scene where soldiers under British command huddle American colonists into a meeting house and set fire to it killing all inside. The strength of THE PATRIOT is that it is a large budgeted film set during colonial America and the American Revolution. Films set in this time period are far and few in between. Yet, the one scene that defines THE PATRIOT is the ambush scene where Mel Gibson along with his two very young sons fire on and decimate a column of British soldiers who have Gibson's son eldest (Heath Ledger) a prisoner and are taking him away for a certain to be held execution. An English officer has just killed Gibson's third eldest son at Gibson's homestead. Following them Gibson now catches up with them on a forest road where they are now en-rout with Ledger. The ambush that erupts is an incredibly filmed and edited and very powerful scene with muskets being fired and rapidly reloaded by Gibson's two youngest sons as Gibson darts back and forth being trees firing on the column. Redcoats fall one by one and as Gibson moves in closer he uses a tomahawk to slaughter his enemy in a most brutal fashion. He mercilessly and brutally bludgeons the last British soldier trying to escape Gibson's blood curdling rage in one of the most horrifying scenes ever filmed.

It is interesting to watch Gibson's rage during these moments. As an actor he is totally focused during this scene. Yet, during many other scenes during this film his performance seems distant, detached and indifferent. Chris Cooper playing Gibson's former commander Colonel Harry Burwell is very well cast and gives a much levelheaded performance as the colonial military leader.
