5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific companion to what will be a great movie,
Just got done reading the patriot and I have to say, it rocks. Molstad does a fantastic job of adapting a great screenplay into a book that not only works as a companion to the film, but also stands out on it's own. Even though the battle scenes will probably be better seen than read, the book has such an enthralling storyline which chronicles the efforts of one man...

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible! One of the worst novels I have ever read!
Alright now I know most of you have seen the movie but I elected to first read the book. I was extremely disapointed in it. The only chapter that even remotely held my attention was the next to the last chapter which described the Battle of Cowpens. Otherwise reading it was a complete waste of time. Bet you didn't know that flintlock muskets had firing pins did...

Just got done reading the patriot and I have to say, it rocks. Molstad does a fantastic job of adapting a great screenplay into a book that not only works as a companion to the film, but also stands out on it's own. Even though the battle scenes will probably be better seen than read, the book has such an enthralling storyline which chronicles the efforts of one man who knows the horrors of war, escaped them, only to have them come back into his life. His only choice is to fight back, not only for the life of his son, but for revenge. If you like a well written novel that will stir emotions, raise spirits, and suprise you, give The Patriot a read. You won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Movie, Great Book!, July 31, 2000
This review is from: The Patriot (Mass Market Paperback)
"The Patriot" novel expounds and expands rather nicely on one of the most significant and remarkable movies I have ever seen. Yes, the film is violent, but the semi-fictionalized history that it presents, and the very much non-fictionalized values and ethics it displays (take note of the high level of Christian imagery -- prayer and the cross are seen often) are valuable reminders of what founded this once-great nation, much of which has been forgotten. As for the novel, it is able, as most books of movies are, to expand the personal lives and detail events far more than the limited time of a movie can. One might suspect that some scenes presented in the novel might well have been filmed, but edited in the final cut. I suppose we shall simply have to wait for the DVD. Meanwhile, if you in any way enjoyed "The Patriot" in the theater -- bring the book home and read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD!!!!, March 13, 2002

This review is from: The Patriot (Mass Market Paperback)
First screenplay book I have read in a long time. I was glad I did. Benjamin Martin and his family are the main characters but many, many people in it are heros. It really made me think about what all so many people have gone through so I can live free. I learned to hate, if that is a good word to use, Travington's Dragoons and the action he and his men took. The book is sad in many places, has a lot of action and will hold your attention. Molstad writes so you can feel like you are there and sharing the hard times with the people in the book. It is very fast moving and enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars twice as good as the movie.., January 19, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Patriot (Mass Market Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book. I liked this book because it showed what one man would do for his family, friends, and country. I rate this book 4stars because it was a lot better than the movie even though it is exactly like the movie, it's just better. This book also shows how one man can perform great things in battle. This book showed how a person's heart can be torn apart but still perform extraordinary things. It is an excellent book for people who enjoy drama and adventure. That is why I rate this book 4stars.

In the face of tyranny, a hero is forged... Not only is a hero forged, but a great book begins, too! If you liked the movie "The Patriot" then I recomend you read this book! It helps you understand some of the things from the movie, too. There's something about this book that makes it hard to put it down. I literally could NOT put it down! Its that good!

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible! One of the worst novels I have ever read!, July 7, 2000

Alright now I know most of you have seen the movie but I elected to first read the book. I was extremely disapointed in it. The only chapter that even remotely held my attention was the next to the last chapter which described the Battle of Cowpens. Otherwise reading it was a complete waste of time. Bet you didn't know that flintlock muskets had firing pins did you? Well according to the book they do. Did you know the British forced black freemen and slaves into their ranks? Did you know also that Washington declared all slaves free, who served a 1 year enlistment? Did you know this book is full of typos and historical lies? Before I started reading it I had no idea what the "true" history of the American Revolution was. I hope no one who reads this book believes that it is anywhere remotely close to historically accurrate. My friends across the pond will probably be offended by the blatant false way the British troops are portrayed. This book seemed to me to be thrown together with poor character development and terrible dialogue between the characters. It was written based on the original screen play which may indicate that it was the screen play that was flawed. The guy that wrote the book also wrote Independence Day and a couple other Sci Fi books so maybe that is the reason this book bites big time. Someone else who at least was fimiliar with the Revolution in the South could have at least cleaned up the mistakes for him. Stephen Molstad should have to suffer the fate of some of the Patriots in his book for writing such a terrible book. I will not be adding it to my collection of books. I would be too embarrassed to have it on the shelf!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will probably give it to my 4 year old for a coloring book. When I see the movie I hope the action and special effects make up for the pain I suffered reading this book. I must add though that the musical score for the movie by John Williams is quite good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awsome, January 19, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Patriot (Mass Market Paperback)
I think this book was very good. I think it was good because it touched my heart greatly the way a father has love and compasion for his children and his country. This book shows the values of life and how much one country means to one man. This book expressed the meaning of what it is to be a patriot. I give this book a four star rating because it could of made the outcome more explicit and detailed. I highly recommend this book for any one who likes adventure and war stories. This book is a great way to read and have fun at the same time!

The Patriot was an all-right movie, and the novelization is a little better than all-right book. As in any novelization of a movie, more about the characters is divulged, and you get to learn more about them. Also, there are some scenes in the book that were deleted from the movie that add to the effect. Not one of the best books I've ever read, but it filled in some blanks left by the movie. All in all, if you enjoyed the movie, I reccommend the book

5.0 out of 5 stars A well-written companion to the movie, September 15, 2000

This book truly captures the movies memorizing and emotional tale in entirety. The words come flying of the page and the events are taking place all around you. The author has completely done his job of making a novel based on a screen play that has substance. He should be commended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Companion Novel To An Epic Masterpiece, September 14, 2000

Steven Hancock (Winston Salem, NC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Patriot (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a well-written novel. It has everything you'd like to read in a novel: action, suspense, romance, and comedy. It sticks close to the movie, adding only little differences and a little more bad language (which it could have done without). This and "Saving Private Ryan" are the best war novels ever written.
