This is a great compact way of storing data and files.

The write speed is fast enough for me because I use Teracopy which is much faster than any other method.

The cap stays inside the holder...problem solved, but the cap was not loose on my unit.

Have owned this flash drive for approx 6 months. I read the reviews regarding the cap being loose, so I placed the drive inside a small nylon flash drive holder on my keyring. The cap stays inside the holder...problem solved, but the cap was not loose on my unit. I encrypted the entire drive with TrueCrypt, formatted to NTFS, and installed the freeware PSMenu portable start menu. Has worked flawlessly, but like any drive I back it up regularly. I work primarily off the flash drive at work. So far it is the most dependable flash drive I have owned. Works fine with Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Great data transfer rate. Looking forward to the price coming down on the 128 GB version, but I'm sure I would manage to fill that up too. Highly recommended.

Tried A few of the 64GB USB Flash and this one is amongst the best. The SuperTelent Luxio 64GB and the Sandisk Cruzer 32GB are nominally faster. And all three are about 3 times faster then the Kingston 64GB.

This would be the best high-capacity USB flash drive available if it weren't for two major issues that the manufacturer has yet to resolve: The design of the cap, and the slow write speeds.

Most reviewers report that the cap comes off very easily. Let me say that this issue is very simple to fix. Look inside the cap. There are 2 long edges and 2 short edges. Look at the short edges. You will see an inner plastic casing that runs along the inner portion of the short edge. By using just your fingernail, this inner plastic casing can be pulled inward slightly to make a small space between the plastic and the aluminum outer casing. Cut a small piece of paper, fold once or twice, and insert it into this space. This will tighten the seal between the cap and the USB drive, and will fix the problem of the cap coming off.

However, there is another larger problem with the design of the cap--it does not fully protect the USB plug inside. If you push on the side of the cap, it will rock back and forth to such a degree that the inside of the cap will actually push against the USB plug. That means that any force acting on the outside of the cap will be transmitted directly to the USB plug--no protection whatsoever!

The issues with the cap have been known for a long time by Patriot Memory. And yet they have never been adequately addressed as customers still complain universally about the cap design. It is not a good sign when a company ignores customer feedback on their flagship product for so long, and for that reason I am giving this product a low score. I hope they fix this problem soon! With just some minor improvements, this could be transformed into an excellent product.

I'm an electrical engineer who tried the Patriot 64GB and 128GB drives in a data-logger project. Now, our logger does NOT provide a clean signal environment and its software is NOT forgiving either. It holds the flash drive to a much higher standard than a PC. As a result, high-capacity drives from HP/PNY and SanDisk crashed and burned -- the logger couldn't reliably talk with them.

These Patriot drives, however, behave just beautifully and I couldn't be happier. Out of 3 Patriot 64GB and 3 Patriot 128GB drives we've tested so far we've seen zero errors or failures of any kind. And, they don' t come preloaded with weird U3 programming (cough - SanDisk - cough) that I have to remove before I can use them.

I also appreciate the solid metal housing; I am not worried about breakage like I am with the light plastic cases from other manufacturers. Note however we don't care much about transfer speed so that is not part of this review.

So far, from an engineering standpoint, I am really impressed with these drives.

EDIT: OK, we have started to see rare erratic behavior from one of the 128GB drives. It occasionally disappears, as if someone unplugged it, and then reappears within a second. Also there are rare hardware errors talking to it. These may be a byproduct of our demanding environment but the other drives don't do this. If we can reproduce the issues on a PC we'll see if Patriot will replace it.

Good:
-- Fast
-- Large capacity

Bad:
-- Cap is a pain. Why not a retractable pin?
-- Drive is too fat. It cannot be plugged into a Brother printer/scanner, or into a laptop USB port if neighboring ports are in use.

I really want to like this drive, but find I don't. Despite the huge capacity, I find myself reaching for smaller (even slower) drives most of the time because this one just won't fit where needed. :(

Let me start off by saying that I'm a professional software engineer and I work for a very large company with an enormous budget allocated to purchasing hardware products. We have hundreds of different types of USB Flash Drives. The Patriot XPorter Magnum drive is the best one of all the ones I've used, and I have been using it almost every single day nearly constantly for about the past year and a half. We have 8 of these drives in my department and not one of them has ever gotten corrupted, and they are extremely reliable and damn near physically invincible. The drive also has an enormous storage capacity and the price is very good for what you get. I love the fact that the chassis is made mostly of aluminum because it can withstand a tremendous beating without getting dented or scratched. Aside from the IronKey Flash Drives(very expensive), this is the most durable drive I've used. The drive also has fast read/write speeds compared to many other drives. The only negatives about this drive are related to it's chassis. Many people have commented that the cap falls off easily, and this is true, but can be fixed by stuffing little shreds of paper into the tabs on the cap until it meets your level of desired snugness. The other thing is that when you have the lanyard attached to the end of it, you can't affix the drives cap on the other end of the drive while it's being used, because the string from the lanyard gets in the way and blocks the cap from being able to snap onto the other end.... making the cap prone to being lost if you like to keep your drive on the lanyard at all times. One thing to consider about this drive is that the drive is physically very large compared to most USB flash drives, particularly in terms of width.Read more ›
