Book Description

Darmon Mysteries October 23, 2003
The year is 1833 and, following the return of an empty carriage, Elizabeth Darmon begins a harrowing odyssey that takes her across British North America in search of her missing family. Caught in a web of kidnapping, conspiracy and murder, the English woman uncovers a plot by a radical element of Reformers, called The Patriotes, who are determined to see Canada free of England’s rule. Most intriguing for Elizabeth, however, is the realization that another woman is impersonating her—but why and, more importantly, will the imitator’s clandestine efforts squelch all hope of Elizabeth finding the family she once cherished?

ElizabethÂ’s brother-in-law, Charles Bagwell, is also a victim of the rebellion, but in a different way. Blinded by a loss of memory after the attack on his family, he is recruited by The Patriotes and tricked into securing the help of Americans, who are stock-piling arms at covert hunting lodges throughout the United States. Family members unwittingly cross paths in their attempts to find one another and, consequently, are thrown into a tumultuous rein of terror that threatens to tear a family and a country apart.

More About the Author

Thomas Thorpe writes in nineteenth century genre, but has a background in space exploration. Tom avidly read science fiction during the dawn era of space exploration, and, after graduating from the University of California at Los Angeles, worked at Eastman Kodak (Lunar Orbiter), the Manned Spacecraft Center and Lowell observatory before landing at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. There, he experienced defining moments of the Mariner, Viking and Surveyor Mars expeditions. Subsequently, he managed the Mars Global Surveyor Project through most of its ten-year operations and has published journal articles on the topic of Mars photometry.

During these missions, be began writing historical fiction concerning the adventures of the Darmon family and mysteries set worldwide within the first half of the nineteenth century. This was a turbulent time wherein many countries struggled with self-government, having just emerged from colonialism or repressive monarchies. In America, Greece, Brazil, Canada, France, Russia and India tensions flared between royal traditionalists and young radicals who tried to free their population from the repression of greedy landowners. As a result, conspiracies abounded within governments and murders were common.

Mr. Thorpe has published five historical mystery thrillers in the Darmon Mystery series. Book Six: Desperate Crossing, is in press at Black Rose Writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dazzling, March 4, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Patriote Proposition (Darmon Mysteries) (Paperback)
The Patriot Proposition was, by all accounts, a historical thriller! There's lots of action to keep the pages turning, and the main character, the prim and proper Elizabeth Darmon, is uncannily three-dimensional. One minute, she's a lady of her time, sitting in a floor-length dress drinking tea out of bone china. And the next her room's been ransacked, she's leaping from a moving carriage, escaping from a wine cellar and held captive on a leper colony. You think you're reading about Arnold Schwartzenegger in the film "Eraser" with nonstop action, chases, and locked room conundrums, not to mention lots of clever ploys and devices, such as impersonations and the revolving disappearance of her family. Over all, THE PATRIOTE PROPOSITION is a fantastic look at Quebec and Northern New England in the 1830's. I look forward to the next book in this series.

The instant I picked up this book, I couldn't put it down. The Patriote Propostion had amazing action and mystery that kept me reading throughout the night. I had to get to the bottom of this whirlwind of constant excitement and gripping cliff-hangers. I never imagined a book could be so EXCITING!!!
