Commendable Patriotism, November 12, 2010
This review is from: Patriots of Ulek (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons #9385/Greyhawk Adventures Module WGQ1) (Paperback)
Patriots of Ulek is a 2nd edition AD&D module for 4-6 characters of level 1-3. The module was written by Anthony Pryor with cover art by John and Laura Lakey and interior art by Ken Frank.
I have DMmed this module twice now, for two different groups. They both came through okay, and more importantly, I enjoyed myself both times. :-)
Patriots is a Greyhawk module, but it can easily be dropped into any game world. The local ruler asks the PCs if they will travel a few days into halfling territory to find out why no one in that neck of the woods has answered the ruler's muster to war. Turns out there's a monster army led by the despot Turrosh Mak, and it's closer than anyone suspects!
The PCs investigate the goblin-infested manor of the halfling Graf, where, depending on the order in which they search, they may be forced to keep a small girl safe as she tags along with them until they can free her parents. My only complaint with this part of the module is that there is no map for the lowest floor.
They leave the manor with the monster army hot on their heels. If they've played their cards right, they are aware of the perfidy of the halfling in charge of the nearby camp and will relieve him of his command in time to rally the troops and meet the monsters at Ebenharfe Gap.
The PCs spend most of the battle watching everybody else fight, but things heat up when a small monster force tries to flank the human/demihuman army and only the PCs stand in the way. The battle as written looks pretty grim for the heroes, but both my parties made it through with the loss of only one character apiece.
All in all, a solid adventure that offers a few hours of good roleplay.
