Was looking for a new author, "somehow" found this book on the library shelf back in 1976. The twists and turns of this story caught my interest and I have had no problem remaining a totally happy fan of her books(Barbara Michaels/Elizabeth Peters)ever since. Patriot's Dream came out around our country's Bicentennial so had an appropriate theme - American History, with time travel, reincarnation, interesting characters, the works! It is still my most favorite of all her books and would be an good candidate for a tv movie if done right!

5.0 out of 5 stars Every library should include Barbara Michaels, October 28, 2004
This review is from: Patriot's Dream (Paperback)
read this gem over 15 years ago, it is remains one of my all-time favorites. I have read everything Ms. Michael's has ever written, with the exception of perhaps two of her books, and I have never been dissappointed. Her stories are compelling and gripping without gratuitious sex or violence, and parents, I encourage you to buy these books for your teens. Make sure you read them as well. Ms. Michaels is a consumate story teller and no personal library should be without at least two of her books!

4.0 out of 5 stars THE PAST IS NOT ALWAYS WHAT IT SEEMS..., January 23, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Those who enjoy historical fiction, with a touch of paranormal romance will definitely enjoy this well -written novel. First released at the time of our Bicentennial, the story goes back and forth in time between eighteenth century and twentieth century Williamsburg, Virginia. Having been to many of the locations mentioned in the story, I doubly enjoyed the journey down memory lane that this book took me on.

When Jan Wilde, a teacher in New York City, goes down to Williamsburg, Virginia, to spend the Bicentennial summer with her elderly Aunt Camilla and Uncle Henry in their historic Wilde House, located in the heart of Colonial Williamsburg on the Duke of Gloucester Street, little did she know what would await her there. It would certainly not be the rest and relaxation that she envisioned. In fact, her slumber would serve as a passageway into the past, a past that would shed new light on her ancestors.

Rich with period details, with well-fleshed characters and a deftly constructed plot, this book is one that fans of the historical fiction genre will certainly enjoy. It is a compelling and masterfully told story that will engage the reader until the very last page is turned.

I have read all of Ms. Michaels' books and this is my favorite. A wonderful heroine, love triangle and the author weaves the present and the past skillfully. The ending will make you cry! I read this book once a year, a must have!

5.0 out of 5 stars Addictive!!!, April 17, 2005

Whew! I feel like I've been caught in the middle of the main character's obsession. I found myself feeling much the same way Jan did--I just need to get through the everyday stuff before I can return to what's happening. I have never read any of Barbara Michaels' books before, but I can't wait correct that mistake :-)

3.0 out of 5 stars Not my favorite but still good..., December 22, 2010

Patriot's Dream by Barbara Michaels centers around Jan Wilde, a young teacher who travels to Williamsburg Virginia to stay with her elderly aunt and uncle to help them in their declining years and escape some of the stress of New York City where she lives with her mother. When she arrives at the house, she starts dreaming about times long past, concerning the American Revolution and begins to follow her ancestors during the war for Independence and begins to find herself becoming attracted to one of the family friends, a man called Jonathan. She begins to question her sanity and wonders if she created Jonathan from her imagination or if he really was a real person.

Michaels is one of my favorite writers. I always enjoy her work and look forward to reading her books. I have to admit that this story was not one of my favorites, but I did enjoy it. The story line was very different and I thought she blended elements of history into the main storyline very well. I found her details of history to be accurate and interesting. I always admire her ability to write stories that walk the fine line between realty and fantasy so well and still keep suspense that make the story interesting without leading the reader to find it completely unbelievable. The only reason why I did not like this one as much as some of her other works is that as I have begun to read so much of her work I find that some of these characters are so smilier to ones from her other books. The hero always seem to have some of the same personality features and most of her heroines are the same. It is not a bad thing but I find it can be a bit distracting.

Highly recommend Amazon for your favorite books, always arrive promptly and in pristine condition.

5.0 out of 5 stars I cried...this is a timely novel, September 22, 2008

I always think I've found my favorite Barbara Mertz (Michaels) novel, but this one topped the rest. And I've now read them all I believe. :) If you love your country and despair of the direction in which we are going, this one is for you. It encouraged me to fight on for freedom and the dream that is America-- even 32 years after Michaels penned this! I love the twists and turns in the novel and the way that Michaels truly "gets" the sadness and glory of the human experience.

Michaels manages to squeeze in history, philosophy, mystery, suspense, theology, the occult, social critique, and romance into almost all of her novels. She is one of the most intelligent writers I've ever read. I always feel a pang after reading her novels because I'm running out of them, and I know she is getting older (she's in her early 80s). I will reread this one every year or so I know. I think this is my new favorite with 'Someone in the House' coming in at a close second-- just for the original ending she gave it. I have never found a writer to match her. Please, Ms. Mertz-- could you write a few more of the Michaels' novels??
