A door to a new level of musical pleasure,
By Mark C Jankus (Minneapolis, MN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Patsy Cline - 12 Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I bought the CD to hear "Crazy" -- which I now think may be the most perfect piece of music I've ever heard -- not expecting to care much for the rest of it. You know how it is, you like one song by an artist but that's about it. Boy was I in for a surprise. There is something about the timbre of this woman's voice that I feel as so strongly beautiful that I get teary when I hear certain notes that she sings. A rich, strong, clear-as-a-bell voice -- she sings with such authority and yet with such delicacy when the song calls for it. Her voice is unique -- it can't be duplicated -- it's pure Patsy and that human being is gone forever. Thank goodness Thomas Edison made it possible to record music, that's all I have to say. There's a reason that 37 years after her death and the end of her short career she is still revered as one of the most important singers of the 20th century. You may have dismissed her as only a country singer, but her music goes so far beyond that. BUY THIS CD. You will not regret it.

One Of Music's Finest Vocalists Ever,
By Supernova (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Patsy Cline - 12 Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
There are many fans of music out there who consider Patsy Cline a country singer. Many forget that her first success was on the Pop charts. To me, she is simply one of the best singers of any genre - ever. Her vocal phrasing was almost perfect and the gut-wrenching emotion that she sang with further enhanced her performances. This CD is filled with hits, all recorded within a short period of time in her too short career. Producer Owen Bradley culled some of the finest performances from Cline heard here. The addition of the Jordanaires as backing vocalists (especially on "Walkin' After Midnight" and "I Fall To Pieces") is perfect. The musical accompaniment doesn't crowd Cline and allows her perfect voice to take center stage - as it should be. Before country/pop music was taken hostage by the plasticness of a talentless, substanceless Shania Twain, there was a true, real performer with a voice to match. A superb vocalist, Patsy Cline is still missed.

One of the 20th century's greatest vocalists,
This review is from: Patsy Cline - 12 Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Patsy Cline (1932-63) is considered a pioneering legend of country music. But in fact, she is one of those important performers who transcends genre. "12 Greatest Hits" contains some truly great songs. Each of Cline's interpretations is a multi-layered, full-bodied performance; you will hear new nuances on repeated listenings.Cline's voice is amazing--smooth as honey, often as sweet, and illuminated with a passionate inner fire. She can sound both heartbroken and ironic in the same song. She truly uses these songs as vehicles by which to express the universal truths of human love and pain. I first got interested in Patsy Cline after seeing the film "Coal Miner's Daughter." Beverly D'Angelo turns in a superb supporting performance as Cline in the film. My recommendation? See the film, and then enjoy this disc of classic Cline.

Only 3 Stars? For Patsy Cline?,
By AvidOldiesCollector (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews

Well, yes. And I don't apologize. Don't get me wrong, I love Patsy Cline as much as anyone among the many 4- and 5-star reviewers so far, and I really regret breaking the string of assessments. But the fact is, there are many, many more superior compilations available now than this MCA release from 1988 which re-issues an earlier vinyl LP produced by Owen Bradley.
For a few dollars more you can pick up one which has all 19 of her Country hit singles registered between 1957 and 1982, the last ten posthumously following her death in that March 1963 plane crash. Also, like far too many of the early compilations, they chose NOT to give us the original version of her first hit for Decca in 1957, Walkin' After Midnight. That version went for 2:30 and reached # 2 Country/# 12 Billboard Pop Top 100 in May. What they give you here was a re-recording done in August 1961, shorter by almost 30 seconds and performed at a slightly faster tempo. The rest are all originals although, technically, tracks 7, 10, and 11 were not among her "12 greatest hits" which is, after all, the title of this album. Back In Baby's Arms was the uncharted B-side of Sweet Dreams (Of You), Why Can't He Be You? was the uncharted flip of Heartaches which, not included here, made it to # 73 Billboard Pop Hot 100 in 1962 (but failed to make the Country charts - go figure), and You're Stronger Than Me was the uncharted flip of So Wrong in 1962. In addition to Heartaches, legitimate hits left off this volume were the B-side to Walkin' After Midnight - A Poor Man's Roses, Or A Rich Man's Gold [# 14 Country] - the double-sided 1962 hit When I Get Thru (You'll Love Me Too)/Imagine That which reached # 10 Country/# 53 Hot 100 and # 21 Country/# 90 Hot 100 respectively, When You Need A Laugh [# 47 Country in 1964], and He Called Me Baby [# 23 Country in December 1964 and her first immediate posthumous hit]. In 1969 her rendition of the old Eddy Arnold hit, Anytime, reached # 73 Country, followed nine years later by Life's Railway To Heaven which topped out at # 98. Two years after that, in 1980, a release of her cut of the old standard Always went all the way to # 18, followed in December by a re-mix of I Fall To Pieces [# 61]. In late 1981 her duet with Jim Reeves on Have You Ever Been Lonely (Have You Ever Been Blue?] soared all the way to # 5, and in 1982 yet another version of I Fall To Pieces, this time dubbing her voice with that of Jim Reeves, was a # 54. With the insert you do get two pages of background notes written by Jay Orr and Don Roy, a chronology of Patsy's all-too-brief life, and a list of session personnel involved on each of the 12 tracks. But while these features and the AAD sound reproduction makes this a nice, inexpensive, sampling of Patsy, MCA can easily turn it into a 5-star offering by simply following the lead of others who re-released earlier 10- and 12-track CDs [Elvis, Donovan, Sarah Vaughan as examples] with bonus tracks.

One of the century's great singers,
By A Customer
This review is from: Patsy Cline - 12 Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I'm not a fan of most country music--I find a lot of it manipulative and corny. Artists like Patsy Cline, however, are absolutely breathtaking. Her voice ranks with Billie Holiday's, and very few others as one of the most distinctive, soulful, and beautiful in all of recorded music. The songs here are wonderful, too--a concise collection of country classics. People like Patsy and Hank Williams should be played for everyone who thinks country music is bad. Like any other form of music, it just doesn't have enough artists as great as Patsy.

Crown Jewels of Country Music,
This review is from: Patsy Cline - 12 Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
This essential country music album is a triumph for all who participated in its success: producer Owen Bradley (whose lush, tasteful written strings pour sorrow on "Sweet Dreams" and "Why Can't He Be You") pianist Floyd Cramer and a first-class Nashville session band (whose piano introductions to "Crazy," "She's Got You," and "I Fall To Pieces" are among the most treasured in music), and, of course, Patsy Cline herself. Many have attempted to copy Patsy Cline's vocal range or stylistic ticks; Reba McEntire, k.d. lang and Mandy Barnett being only among the more successful. But something about ballads brought out the pain and emotional desolation in Cline's voice that few C&W singers then or now could match. Listen to her sing the rather trite line "I've been so wrong for so long," and hear the sorrow, anger and regret scribbled into her delivery. Hear her line, "You don't love me, it's plain," and tears nearly well up as if you're hearing this with her for the first time. Compare her reading of the line, "I've got your memory, or has it got me?" with Jimmy Buffett's sloppy, careless version on "Fruitcakes," and you'll see who is the better musical caretaker. Nearly every song on the LP fits that model, as Cline and her stellar support keep the spirit, if not letter, of what country music is and should be to its fans. Everyone who enjoys country music or female singers in general should own a copy of this album.

THE GREATEST CD,
By "madzex" (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Patsy Cline - 12 Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I have owned this CD for about 2 months and I am in love with it. The cd gives you the most powering songs of her short but great life. This CD in a way helps remembers her great strong singing talent. She has been remembered as the Number one selling Country artist of all times. Today there are some new comers but you still dont get the full effects of Patsy Cline's work. Her life was taken short and that is a shame. She would have had a great career making everyone fall in love with her uniqe voice. She will always be in all of our heart in the biggest way or even the smallest way doesnt matter. She will always be Patsy Cline..Number one Madz

Twenty six reviews, all five stars! And I'll make it Twenty seven! Patsy Cline is one of the all time greats, with the ability to express a voice that came from deep within, from her heart, from her soul. She still lives today through the legacy of her recordings and also through her influence on so many country ladies including Loretta Lynn, Reba McEntire, LeeAnne Womack, k.d. lang, Mandy Barnett, and Sara Evans. But don't forget the others on these performances who contributed so much. There are the Jordonaires (who called her a female Elvis?...well, she did have the vocal group backing her who backed many of Elvis' greatest hits) on all of the cuts; Harold Bradley's electric bass also on all of these performances; Floyd Cramer's piano on "Walkin' After Midnight", "Sweet Dreams", "Crazy", "So Wrong", "Strange", "She's Got You", and "Faded Love"; Walter Haines' steel guitar on "Walkin' After Midnight", "Crazy", "Strange", "She's Got You", and "You're Stronger Than Me". And then there are the writers of the songs that she breathed life and emotion into: Hank Cochran's "I Fall to Pieces", "She's Got You", "Why Can't He Be You", and "You're Stronger Than Me,"; Don Gibson's "Sweet Dreams"; Willie Nelson's "Crazy"; Carl Perkins' "So Wrong"; Mel Tillis' "Strange"; Bob Wills' "Faded Love." All these talents together, backing a great voice of our times, have contributed one of music's greatest treasures to us, and we should be grateful to all those I mentioned and those I haven't.

CRAZY...ABOUT THIS CD!,
By Lawyeraau (Balmoral Castle) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (COMMUNITY FORUM 04) (TOP 100 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: Patsy Cline - 12 Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
This hard living, hard loving, country diva had one of the most emotive voices in the history of country music. In her too short career, cut prematurely in a plane crash, she managed to put together a roster of musical hits. This is an absolutely definitive CD. There is simply not one bad cut on it, with stand outs such as: "Crazy", "She's Got You", "Sweet Dreams", "Back in Baby's Arm's", and "Leaving on Your Mind". Ten of the cuts on this CD were top ten tunes on the pop charts of the time, while seven of them made the top ten on the country charts. Fans of Ms. Cline's, as well as those music lovers just wanting a great CD, would be well satisifed with it. |
