This has consistently been the one book I turn to whenever I'm looking to "tweak" a pattern, change a collar, add a pocket or any design detail. I had an old edition (over 30 years), and while the basics never change, techniques do and this book reflects the most modern of how to's and styles. Just browsing the pages is enough to get me inspired to start another project. I love it, and most of all, I depend upon it. Patternmaking for Fashion Design (5th Edition) should set me up for the next 30 years!!

This book is helpful in guiding first time commercial pattern making. It gives suppliers and necessary equipment. I will definately keep it as a reference book. It is written at a very high level of instructions. Sometimes it takes me several readings to understand with the instructions. I have sewn for 40 years, and have a good knowledge basis, and this book is teaching me quite a bit. Very helpful!

I have been told that this is THE pattern making textbook used at most fashion design schools, and is a required textbook for my advanced pattern making class. However, I do not like this book. I find the instructions are not very detailed, it doesn't discuss grain lines, and many of the pictures for the various design options do not make it clear where the design lines are on the body/apex. We used another book, The Principals of Flat Pattern Design by Nora MacDonald for a beginning pattern design class, and I found that book to be much better written; more detailed instructions. If this was not a required book I would not bother with it.

I finally found my next step with this book Patternmaking for Fashion Design 5th edition. I love the fitting portion on pants, the evaluation section, the different designs, techniques, constructions process, children and underwear section. I am blown away with contentment on the different designs. The instructions and illustrations are simple. This book really compliments Don McCunn's "How to Make Sewing Patterns" book. I like the sample work sheet, it is the best I seen so far (must modify mines to reflect what I see on page 20-21. This will be my designs manual and so much more. I cannot say enough about how please I am with this book. Love It!!!! Helen J Armstrong Rocks!!!! A MUST HAVE for cutter!

This books has excellent diagrams and step by step instructions. It was pretty expensive. BUT the negative is that the instructions do not get the end result for most patterns. There is a lot of inaccuracies. But that is what the instructor at my school uses this book so i had to buy it. But some of these patterns are clearly not tested eg. raglan sleeve, exaggerated sleeve , to name a few.

Although as comprehensive a book on patternmaking as is available, this text is desperately in need of proof reading. Take for example instructions that refer to "Figure 2a" and "Figure 2b" on a page with illustrations labeled "Design 1" and "Design 2". Is "Design 1" actually 2a? One is left to puzzle out inconsistencies that result from a lack of careful proof reading. A fifth edition, one would hope, would have these issues resolved.

This is a good basic text for patternmaking, but I like the spiral bound edition better.

Although the updates in the (2009) 5th edition are great, I just noticed that the section on fitting problems is no longer in the book. I have a 1st edition (1987) and the fitting/corrections chapter is one of the most useful sections in the entire book! I'm sorry to see that it has been removed from this edition. If you don't have a previous edition, you don't know what you're missing!

Reviews are for Older Editions not 5th edition!,

I was looking for a review of the current edition but the reviews that show up first are for older editions not the current edition! You have to sort for newest reviews to find the ones for the current edition. This is very misleading for new customers!
