Great early Cecil Payne,
By Bomojaz (South Central PA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Patterns of Jazz (Audio CD)
This initial LP outing by Cecil Payne (he had a couple of R&B-ish dates earlier for Decca) is an absolute gem. Payne was one of the most delicately lyrical baritone sax players, and that quality really shines on this album. Dizzy Gillespie's GROOVIN' HIGH and the Harold Arlen standard THIS TIME THE DREAM'S ON ME are both taken up-tempo and Cecil dances through them like sunlight sparkling on a clear lake. His compositional skills are also on display, and both ARNETTA and MAN OF MOODS are attractive tunes. Kenny Dorham is on trumpet for four tracks, and does a real nice job on Payne's BRINGING UP FATHER. Pianist Duke Jordan is delightful as usual. This CD never ceases to give pleasure, no matter how often I listen to it. |
