This review is from: History of the Chicago Police (Patterson Smith Series in Criminology, Law Enforcement & Social Problems, Publication No. 164) (Hardcover)
This book was of special interest to me and my family. My great gradfather, Lt. Martin Quinn, on my mother's side is mentioned several times in the book. He was a particapant of the Chicago Police command in charge of breaking up the Hay Market Rioter's. Two of his 25 company men under his command were killed during the violence and several others were wounded. My family is proud to be a part of Chicago's police history. Both of my grandfather's were also members of the Chicago Police. This book was written in 1887 to give the police department some positive public relations views after the 1886 riots. I believe it did a very good job explaining the political climate of the times and how the police department had to function to maintain the peace and order in the city we love.

For some time I'd been looking for this reprint of this 1887 history of the Chicago Police over the tumultuous era of the violent "union versus industry" incidents. In this book that story is told clearly and fairly. Amazon had a new copy of it at half the competition's price. It's a great book well worthy of the republishing, and thank you Amazon, for making it available.
