4.0 out of 5 stars Tasty indeed, November 9, 2001

This 2 CD set features early post-Labelle Patti. With so many reissues to her credit, much of this is already on CD. But "Save the Last Dance for Me" may itself be worth the price. In '78, I did not think it was all that, but today it seems like genius. Credit the swell production and Patti's restrained, competent vocals.
There are a few other gems on "Tasty" : Eyes in the Back of My Head is one of them. "Don't Let Go" works. "I See Home" is fine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vintage Patti, April 17, 2002

This review is from: Patti Labelle / Tasty (Audio CD)
Patti, Patti, Patti, what can I say. This one of the greatest vocalist of all time. I was so glad to find these treasures on cd. Here she showcases her different ranges. On some of the songs you hear a more subtle and beautiful voice while on others you hear Patti in her trademark belt which is just as beautiful. My favorite cuts are of course her anthem, "You Are My Friend," but there are hidden gems such as "Since I Don't Have You," "Do I Stand A Chance," "Little Girls," and "I see home." Classic Patti at her best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Patti: heavy on bass and marinated with strings, January 12, 2006
This review is from: Patti Labelle / Tasty (Audio CD)
By reviewing an artist's work it's necessary to consider both its importance in the context of the genre/movement it belongs to and in the general output of the artist's carreer.

This compilation deserves a 4-star-grading because Patti LaBelle's first couple of solo albums are among the best productions of the so-called Philadelphia Soul and the most solid works of her sometimes erractic solo carreer. 'Patti LaBelle', the debut album, is the typical LP where the artist tries to offer a little bit of everything to everybody, and 'abandoned' Labelle-the-group fans should be as pleased as the ones who love Patti's typical belting and vocal histrionics. Lovely ballads all around, and some not that successful covers complete the collection. It features Patti's co-written signature tune, the gorgeous 'You Are My Friend', plus the highly danceable single 'Dan swit Me'. Very emotional, raw interpretations like the midtime 'I Think About You' enrich this disk, and Patti's vocals are somehow more restrained than they normally are, but she comes back with her lungs bombing on top on her follow-up tastefull 'Tasty' album.

Despite of some unnecessary covers that don't add much to the song like the album's opener, here she delivers top-quality salsa ('Teach Me Tonight'), a touching and soulful gospel-influenced belted ballad ('Quiet Time'), a lot of emotional range on her interpretations (the sophisticated 'Little Girls') and great funk ('Eyes In The Back Of My Head'). Another solid release, and perhaps with this package you get the best solo albums Patti's ever made, since both are very well produced, with top musicians on the background and Patti's voice shining at its best. The material varies from good to very good, something that can't be said about many of her albums.

Only the self-titled debut is still in print elsewhere, so this import is somehow a rarity as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars POWERFUL PATTI, January 26, 2008
This review is from: Patti Labelle / Tasty (Audio CD)
Patti's first 2 solo albums on CD. I already had the US " PATTI LABELLE " on CD, but bought this to finally have Patti's 2nd solo " TASTY " on CD. You can hear Patti at her peak vocally on these 2 albums. What can you say about one of the best, most powerful singers that ever lived? These albums contain POWERFUL PATTI and she sings just about every type of genre on these albums. This was when Patti was really letting loose in the studio, and there are no dull moments on here, except for one total clunker named LITLE GIRLS that makes you wonder why did she sing that ?

But everything else is stellar with Hard Funk, Big Ballads, Blues, Patti doing a Bob Dylan song, Gospel, Oldies , even Latin with the awesome TEACH ME TONIGHT. Dig the funk & that bass line of the funk nasty FUNKY MUSIC [ SHO 'NUFF TURNS ME ON ], and how about that blowing harmonica on YOU CAN'T JUDGE A BOOK BY THE COVER . Powerful Patti all over the place here on these 22 songs. There's no end to my favorite songs on these 2 1977/1978 releases.

I'm glad to see that they FINALLY released the song "Teach Me Tonight (Me Gusta Tu Baile)" on CD.
It's a great Latin beat song with a strong soul Diva's voice that only Patti can sing. One of her best.

THE PATTI LABELLE ALBUM HAS THE BEST HIT ON THERE AND THAT IS "DAN SWIT ME". WHAT A SONG...THE BEAT HAS YOU MOVING FOREVER AND EVER. THE NEXT SIX MINUTES WILL BE THE BEST MINUTES OF YOUR LIFE. THE TASTY ALBUM HAS THE SONG WHICH I THINK IS THE MOST WORTH WILD TO HAVE AND THAT IS "EYES IN THE BACK OF MY HEAD". AGAIN, WHAT A SONG FOR THE LATE 70'S.
