This marvelous educational tool will help children understand the importance and value of preserving and protecting our environment while conveying a message of hope and inspiring environmental stewardship in children and adults alike. --Jay Holcomb, Director, International Bird Rescue Research Center

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill in April 2010 impacted lives along the Gulf coast as no hurricane could. In this book, Lynda Deniger gives young readers a first-hand account of the effect of the oil spill on the animals that live in and around the waters of South Louisiana. Lynda Deniger has captured the aura that surrounded the Gulf Oil spill in a way that not only tells the facts of this tragedy but teaches children about the consequences for the environment when such a tragedy occurs. My university students enjoyed using this book as the center of their theme units for a language arts class so much that many of them took the book and some of their activities into the classroom to share with their cooperating teachers during their field experience. The children loved listening to both the book and the songs included on the CD that is included in the back of this book. The art work is delightful, the language appropriate and the story imaginative. The song on the CD is like icing on a cake! To those considering purchasing this book, I highly recommend it for your children's library!

Patti Pelican and the Gulf Oil Spill by Lynda Wurster Deniger recounts the tragic Gulf Oil Spill in 2010 and how it endangered the lives of many animals that call the Gulf home.

Captain Charley, a shrimp boat captain, is getting ready to head out on his boat Salty Seas when devastating news of an explosion on an oil rig comes across his radio. Charley's friends Patti Pelican, Sammy Seagull and Dottie Dolphin hear the news, but don't quite understand the gravity of the situation until the oil begins to take over the waters in which they live and eat. Hungry, Patti Pelican and Sammy Seagull venture into the oily waters to hunt for fish. The harmful oil soon overtakes them and they become sick and unable to fly. Will their friend Charley find them in time to save them?

Patti Pelican and The Gulf Oil Spill is illustrated by Paulette Ferguson. The illustrations vividly illuminate what humans and animals faced during this catastrophic event.

The story teaches children just how delicate our planet is and how one event can effect the lives of many. Children also discover how people worked together to save the gulf and all the creatures that inhabit the area.

I recommend reading Patti Pelican and The Gulf Oil Spill.

It's not often something stirs up childhood days. This book did that for me. It brought back fond memories of salty sea air and stretchy pink taffy. It conjured up feelings of warm sunlight and the sounds of seagulls blending with the rush of waves on a soft beach. A delightful book. Thanks so much for writing it and reminding me of those summer days gone by.

As a Louisiana educator, it is wonderful to see a local author tell "our stories." The disaster in the Gulf impacted all of us in so many ways. My own 2nd grade students could talk of nothing else for weeks and I tried my best to talk with them about the subject on their level. Ms. Deniger's book has not only brought light to this disaster, but she has also provided us with a springboard for discussion with our children about the environmental impact of this tragedy.

In the book Ms. Deniger focuses on the efforts of the International Bird Rescue Research Center (IBRRC) to save wildlife that was endangered by the oil and other chemicals in the Gulf. This allows the children to focus on something with which they are familiar--animals--while at the same time avoiding the politics and controversy that surrounds BP's responsibility for the oil leak. Additionally, Ms. Deniger is donating a portion of the proceeds from the book to the IBRRC.

Using the familiar characters from her previous Salty Seas & His Heroic Friends book, Ms. Deniger tells a story that children will enjoy and that may even get them thinking about what they can do to help in the continued clean-up of the Louisiana Gulf Coast.
