5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT MUSIC -- WITH ATTITUDE!
I bought this CD on the strength of the two singles, "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough" and "No Mistakes", but the rest of the album is just as good, if not better. This CD projects much of the same attitude as Sheryl Crow's self-titled scorcher: tough, jaded, and suspicious on the outside, but softer under the surface.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT MUSIC -- WITH ATTITUDE!, April 8, 1999

I bought this CD on the strength of the two singles, "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough" and "No Mistakes", but the rest of the album is just as good, if not better. This CD projects much of the same attitude as Sheryl Crow's self-titled scorcher: tough, jaded, and suspicious on the outside, but softer under the surface.

Whether rejoicing in love's beginnings ("River of Love"), or mourning its end ("Sometimes", "I Should Be Laughing"), Smyth leaves no doubt that she's a tough cookie who is more than capable of kicking your butt. The highlight of the album, in fact, is "My Town", an in-your-face declaration of pride in her New York City roots.

Like all great albums, this one flows seamlessly from one great song to another, weaving together different aspects of Smyth's persona into a musical tapestry. Yes, the album is somewhat over-produced -- a little more rawness would have made it even better. But overall, this is an excellent piece of work that begs the question, "When are you going to go back into the studio, Patty?"

5.0 out of 5 stars Patty's best solo album, August 19, 1998

This follow-up to "Never Enough" leaves you wanting more of Patty Smyth. "Out There" and "Shine" will rock your socks off, while "No Mistakes" will make you want to lie back, close your eyes, and just take in that incredible voice.

Smyth delivered a long-awaited comeback knockout with this collection of rockers and pop gems. "I should be laughing" and "No mistakes" are highlights as is the hit duet w/Don Henley "Sometimes love just ain't enough". A great release from an artist who's material is hard to come by.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hard Core Pop, March 9, 2000

The album is good sample of Smyth's talent. She has a sound that is unique with her raspy-like voice. It is a sound that fits all styles. There are hard core, rough lyrics such as "My Town" and there are the sensitive soft poems such as "I Should be Laughing". If you liked Scandal's sound then this album is for you. If you like her voice then any of her albums are for you.

We grew up listening to Scandal so we of course love Patty Smyth. She has a great voice and all of her songs are very effervescent and you never get tired of listening to them. One of the best of the 80's

4.0 out of 5 stars Patty Smyth has enough guts and quality to make the day., November 2, 2005
This review is from: Patty Smyth (Audio CD)
How can you possible go wrong when you get help from Don Henley on the chourus ?. There are two tracks on this album who stands out. It`s Track 1 No Mistakes and Track 4 sometimes love just ain`t enough`. What i realy like is the rawness and pain in here voice. Maybe you can called it Janis Joplin Light in a way. The other tracks are a mixed bag of listening experience. The duet Sometimes love just aint enough has quality written all over it. It builds up a certain mood, and when Henley clicked in. Aaaah. Total harmony.
This is the ultimate hit ballad on this Cd. Henley has also the pain in his voice, that makes you shiver. But how can you realy go wrong when you get Roy Bittan (of Springsteen and
Bob Seeger, piano, keyboard, fame) to produce the album.
All in all Patty Smyth is a good treat , and have a enough guts in here voice to make the day.
