HEALTH

THE BARK OF THE PAU D’ARCO TREE, a longtime folk medicine in South America, has in recent years brought hope to the millions of people worldwide who are turning to botanical medicines. Traditionally used to treat a wide range of ailments, pau d’arco is today one of the most widely used immunostimulants. Many have found it to be particularly valuable in managing allergies associated with the Candida yeast syndrome and in disorders involving a weakened immune system.

As the most complete chronicle of the science and folklore of pau d’arco, this book will serve as an invaluable resource for herbalists, scientists, and anyone interested in medicines from the rain forests of South America. Kenneth Jones describes the different varieties of pau d’arco and their applications in South American folk medicine, as well as giving clear directions for the herb’s preparation and dosage in the form of a tea and as an extract. Reviewing the wide-ranging scientific literature concerning pau d’arco, he also summarizes the results of the most up-to-date research on its medical benefits. Moreover, he points out the ecological dangers facing this and other valuable rain forest plants, stressing our need to ensure the sustainability of the tropical rain forests and the life giving herbs they contain.

KENNETH JONES is a medical writer and consultant specializing in ethnobotany. He is also the author of Shiitake: The Healing Mushroom and Reishi: Ancient Herb for Modern Times.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lot of knowledge in a small book., May 22, 2010

This review is from: Pau d'Arco: Immune Power from the Rain Forest (Paperback)
I was relieved to find that this book was not a sales pitch for some herbal product. On the contrary, this is a scholarly report on the many varieties of Pao d'Arco trees; their supposed benefits; their chemical compounds; their individual characteristics; and where they grow, etc. It talks about how the tree has been used successfully by the people of South America, Mexico, etc. for generations to help with a number of ailments. It talks about the Shamans and their vast knowledge of things herbal. But it also mentions modern scientific investigations undertaken - with mixed results. Overall, it gives a very balanced presentation as to the tree's potential. And finally, it is a plea for saving the rain forest so that these trees and herbs are not lost forever.

This is a small book - only 110 pages, with an extra 40 pages of End Notes. A few b & w photographs and illustrations.

Well worth the read.
