A Gifted Performer,

This review is from: Paul Anka - Rock Swings: Live at the Montreal Jazz Festival DVD (DVD)
This has to be one of the finest classic pop concert dvds ever produced. It's wonderful to experience a singer and a songwriter whose career spans decades of wonderfully conceived songs, yet has an appreciation for the music of today's younger performers. This concert is a highlight for those with mature musical appreciation and a taste for the finer things in life. If you enjoy Paul Anka's latest cd Rock Swings then this concert is a definite must-see!

As in all his performances, Paul continues to outdo himself. Having seen him perform live, this DVD puts you in the front seat of this concert! A simple and honest performer, Paul Anka makes you feel that he is performing just for you.

I wanted to give this 3.5 stars (but have to round it up to 4) if Diana Krall's Live in Paris is a 5. It is an entertaining show but not a first class production like fellow Canadian, Diana's. I enjoy Paul's energy in performance and his talent in song writing. Moreover, I get to show my teenage kids that the "old" songs can be cool especially performed in a jazz format. After a few interactions between Paul and the audience my younger son turned to me and asked if the DVD was rated PG-13. You will know what I mean when you watch it.
Well, before I bought this DVD I was looking for a review here in Amazon since I know nothing about this show. But I got none and took a chance. I got lucky. Usually after reading a few different reviews from Amazon I get an idea of what to expect. Hope this gives you a hint.

a perfection of a dvd, both audio and video, with excellent performances. Track 13 that shows Sammy Davis jr. is very touching and track 14 which immediately follows-showing the ability of various components of the band-rises you to the stars.

Not a patch on the Rock Swings CD,

I am a big Paul Anka fan, so this isn't easy. It's a brilliantly filmed DVD and a beautiful collection of songs. But, for those who are considering this DVD after recently hearing his incredible Rock Swings CD, I am sorry to say it is a big disappointment. Paul's band is the tightest imaginable, but Paul performs the new songs as if he has practiced them only a few times. He misses key words, delivers lines out of time and seems overall less than polished with them. His performance of 'It's My Life' is genuinely cringeworthy. On the other hand, now that I've seen this DVD, I appreciate the perfection of the studio CD so much more. These songs are a work of art.
