Excellent Book for Laypersons and Bible Students,

This review is from: Paul The Apostle (Paperback)
I recently bought several books on the Apostle Paul, and in my opinion this is the best overall summary written for laypersons and serious Bible students. Well organized and doesn't take a lot for granted. I really enjoy the articles throughout the book on subjects important to understanding the times (e.g., letter writing, Roman politics, etc). My wife and I are getting ready to take a Journeys of Apostle Paul tour in Greece and Turkey and this will be the one book I will be taking with me. This author is one of those that doesn't tire you out with long, scholarly sentences. A great read.

this book was very interesting and informative. I especially enjoyed the look at the environment Paul grew up in and the impact that would have on a dispersion Jew. I also liked the approach to the letters, their chronology, and the disputes involved over each. I found the book easy to read and inviting. I came away having a much better picture of who this amazing man really was.

This book is a pleasure to read. The author has a nice conversational writing style. He does a great job of bringing the Apostle Paul to life as a real person, and to put his travels in context. His explanations of the ancient cities were very interesting. He also provides nice overviews of his letter's, and explains the situations in the cities that triggered his writing them. I'll be on the lookout for more books from the author.

In my opinion, this is a wonderfully non-sectarian look at the life and ministry of Paul. It has plenty of research material and is written in a very readable style. Another thing that I appreciate is his implied belief and confidence in God and His purposes in preserving the scriptures for our times.

Extraordinary book. Could be a college text book. Full of things I did not know. Good for novice on the subject of Paul. Like perhaps a college sophomore type.

Picirilli's look at the life and times of the Apostle to the Gentiles is one of the most enjoyable reads for me on this topic. Digging deep into the history of the period and into the text of Scripture, the writer provides the modern reader a fascinating insight into the life and ministry of Paul. Throughout the text, the author employs little rubrics that give the reader insight into 1st century customs and history, which bring portions of the text alive to the reader. Picirilli is not afraid to deal with controversial discussion on the topic and handles these areas with grace and ease. Without hesitation, I would recommend this work to the lay or pastoral student of Pauline history and theology.
